My hobbies : LARP and sewing

Post by Arkielle on Wed Nov 10, 2010 10:20 am

Do you know LARP (Live Action Role Playing)? If you are found of disguising yourself, acting and fantastic univers, you probably love LARP too? If you love fighting with safe weapons it'll be good too!

It's a recent hobby for me, i started the week-end of my 29th birthday (i'm 31 now) but I've already tokk part oh 6 or 7 week-end each year

And with the activities, i started too sewing my own costumes

Me in my "labo" in my physician outfit

Elisabeth Swan character for a cosplay show

A kind of a dryad

I'm in theright of the pics in my 'Bohemian outfit'

My first costume very often used for peasant character

At each event, a face painter was hired to turn us in demons, zombies, fairies, fire or water spirits ;-) Everything is connected ;-)

An example of the quick zombie design of a friend of mine

My hubby's into Werewolf LARP, but has gotten out of it since retiring from the Navy. It's not the same playing w/ his old group.

I did a belly paint for a gal who does LARP, she is a dragon. This is the first belly I ever did, so be kind, it's kind of bare, but she was thrilled with it.

I'll try to explain to you with my aproximate english ;-)

Some organisators (often a group of good friend and fond of larping) create a fantastic world (medieval-fantastic, western, post-apocalyptic,..) , some creatures, religions, political intrigues and they create a scenario for the week-end (we call it a live).

In a side, you have the players characters. They chose their character (elven, barbarian, wizard,..) background (their biography and temperament) and outfit (costumes, weapons,..). They don't know what will happen during the live.

In the other side (and i'm part of it most of the time), you have the non-player characters. They are ennemies or allies of the player characters. They are almost aware of the scenario and help or not the players saving this endangered world ;-)

When you are non player character, you can be several characters during the week-end and take part in battles (with safe weapons in latex or foam) ;-)

It's usuallly take place in the coutryside.

It can involved 20 people (for a murder), 100 people in an average week-end live or more than 1000 people for the mass larp as mythodea in Germany or Avatar in Belgium.

We are adults playing to pretend but we know we are playing ;-)

Am I clear?

I have just gotten into sewing. I do hope that my skills get where yours are. I want to make medieval customs. I love English history!

I love your costumes! I have done several simple designs myself, but only for family and friends. I did Renaissance costumes for my husband and two daughters, all the way down to their belts with tankards and coin purses. That was so fun! I've also done regency period gowns for myself, a friend and my two daughters. They were high-waisted and gathered in the back like those from A&E's Pride & Prejudice. I really get into the materials that matched the period, and all the details that make it look authentic. Putting it all together was a lot more fun than the actual sewing.

I don't really sew. LOL. I can't follow a pattern to save my life. I worked mostly from my own weird ideas on how things should go together, and they actually looked good. It's been a LONG time since I've tried anything though. My sewing machine is broken and I have been too busy/lazy to get it fixed. Sad

You costumes are awesome...

We don't get dressed up (we would if we could) but regularly play silly buggers at work, last night we were Ninja Knights and spent far to long jousting with plant spirals and having ninja fights (this sound much more juvenile than I had intended, we did do work it was just interspersed with periods of ninja fighting jousting and the Charleston, Wednesday nights at bunnings are boring). I think adults need to play still, if we don't it ages us so fast. I wish we had a LARP near us, I would so join.

I used to do table top style games: AD&D, Champions, Stalking the Night Fantastic, etc. My hubby & I used to host all the games in our tiny apartment in our young married years.
