I feel your November slump! Me too! It's so cold here and not much is going on party/event wise.
I don't know if I will register or not.. If I do I'll be looking for a roommate.

I'm going to LaFete this year!
It's a very cozy, relaxed New Orleans event. I've not been to other conventions so I don't have a lot to compare it to, but I went the first year and found it to be like a family reunion. It's not very structured, but lots of fun. There are body painting sessions in the evenings, a zombie crawl, a St. Patty's parade, and a fundraising opportunity at the zoo on the last day. I'm excited to see how things have progressed since my last visit to LaFete a few years ago.

This convention is not new but had a new producer last year and she really listened to the feedback from instructors and participants and has made some major changes. Vegas is going to be a blast! The instructors are just starting to talk and spread the bug!
The east coat convention will be too and at 10 years fab! The drawback is it is for many of us at a busy time.
If you are new the timing can play in your favor. Vegas will get you a jump on the season with pre busy season skill building. As many seasoned pros will attend both conventions with networking you can maybe pickup work in May filling in for them as they head off to another convention.
For a beginner I suggest classes that are not overfilled and overwhelming. Many a newbie has stories of just feeling glazed over at big events. So no matter what you choose get in there and ask. I think FPBAC is a great convention for newer painters as the instructors are a bit more accessible.
The go to guys for instructing will be at both conventions so you are assured you will get what you need. The Vegas experience is pretty cheap, and a plethora of talent will be there. I always just stock up with goodies and making a salad to chill with friends or take to a jam is healthier and cheaper than hitting the eateries. So find me if you want to hit the market I'll have a car and be heading there for supplies.
As for the PG-13, there is body painting happening but what you want to see you can and what you don't you won't.
Plus lots of balloon classes. Ken Stillman. Even if you are not a twister an basic how to do basic balloon stuff can help you work with a team of painters - never know what skill you need in a pinch. The convention has lots of airbrush classes too on face painting, basic freehanding, and a class on enhancing your airbrush tattoos (and any painting) with alcohol activated makeup, gels and more. Top body painters, top face painters and a whole bunch of low stress competitions each with prizes from the vendors. And vendors from all the major makeup companies........
I love the convention in May but what I spend to go in turn cost me a loss of 4x's that amount! I have a festival I do then and our first Grad Night is June 1 this year! So I am heading to Vegas and I this week I really start to work on class content, connecting with other instructors to make for a rewarding 2011 experience.
