Over 100 Pointe Shoes Later

Post by Psalmbook on Tue Nov 23, 2010 7:43 am

I wouldn't call this hobby. It's more like once people find you can do 1 form of art they think you can do anything Very Happy I was asked to collect as many old pointe shoes(ballet shoes) from all the dancers where my son dances & decorate them for sale during The Nutcracker intermission. This is a challenge as they are often stained, ripped, etc. Here's a pic of 2 of them. I'll try to get some more. My daughters helped, so I can't get all the credit.

I was hoping you would post pics when you first mentioned this in a thread. What a wonderful idea!

Yep, but I tried to prep for a life of crime by hot gluing my finger print clean off last night Very Happy It's on my finger that could tell everyone they're #1!

It's all worth it! Last year we tried it at the last minute. We had only 20 shoes & had ladies "fighting" in the lobby of the theatre for the shoes! We sold them before the show started. We all went home & made shoes that night & ended up having only 20 more.

That's up for debate right now. I'd like to ask $20, but last year we did $10... so maybe we'll compromise at $15 Very Happy
I'm a bottom liner & they really need the $$$$. The director wants to make it affordable for all feel $20 might be too much to ask.
The dance store here makes some very high end looking ones & sells them for $45 - $50 each.

To be honest with you, I'd pay $20 for them...no problem.....
I mean New Toe shoes cost more than that...right?

$85 & up for a good pair(I think... boys don't wear them, so I've never bought a pair). A strong dancer can go through a pair a week & many performers go through a pair in 1 performance.

Good grief, they are beautiful!!!!! I love them, I too wondered how it was going since you first mentioned it!! I work at a bank and one year we got these small piggy banks and asked local artists to "decorate" them to auction off and it went over pretty good, maybe you could suggest doing that for next year for a few of the shoes, can't wait to see more of them Psalm, so pretty!

Those are awesome! I'm a dancer, used to do pointe, and I definitely have some old ones lying around.

Yes, they are usually about $80 to $90 a pair when they're new. Personally I went through about a pair a year when I was dancing in them 2 days a week in class. Some professional ballerinas do use a new pair for every show, but it's usually special brands that come already "broken in" and only last a few days. It definitely depends on your feet--everyone breaks them in at different speeds. A dancer's perspective for ya! Razz

Our girls at the company dance 6-7 days a week, so they go through shoes fast. It's good for me as I have tons of shoes to decorate.
