Having a change of heart about PPF.

Post by Metina on Tue Feb 17, 2009 11:44 am

I hope things haven't hit your business, but I am starting to change my tune about turning my nose up at PPF. I have turned down several this year in hopes of getting my full rate without much luck. I just told my husband last night that I am regretting it a bit and he said to go back to them and take their offer.

As luck would have it, one contacted me again asking me to please take it as a PPF and I have agreed. I also went back to several others and they are estatic. I am just going to look at this year as a bit of rebuilding for myself and others. I was stunned when one that I emailed back thanked me for the offer, but said that all of their events had been cancelled due to cut backs. YIKES!

Anyway for the Spring at least I am having a change at heart for PPF and I am fine with it. Hopefully I will be blessed with good fortune and large turn outs at the events.

I am also going to promote myself like hell. Anyway just wanted to share my thoughts.

That's a good choice. Especially since the economy is the way it is. I've been getting a lot of calls lately but people are scared away by my rates. I'm comparable to other (talented) painters in my area. There are a few painters that are a lot cheaper, but their work is horrible. I don't want to lower my standards just to make a buck.

I got a call yesterday for an Easter egg hunt. She's thinking about me doing a PPF there instead of paying me. Should I charge a minimum?

You may want to ask if they can at least offer you $25-$50 to cover travel and expenses in case no one shows up.

In just a morning of a few emails, I have secured several PPF's. I figure at least it is work and an opportunity to promote myself. I am trying to be mindful of further promotional opps and also ask them to throw in some promotion and advertising in exchange for my coming.

I guess until things rebound a bit, we will have to be flexible. I guess if we think about it, there would be some opps out there that could be more beneficial that purchasing an add and we will make some money(hopefully) also.

I am confident that doing some PPF right away, I will secure more jobs for the summer and fall from people seeing me during the spring.

Good for you Metina! The possibilities are endless with PPF. You can really make a LOT of money there depending on your speed and the crowd attendance. We have to be more careful of what we accept, but if we are wise there is a lot of potential.

I am careful about what festivals I agree to attend. I check to see if there are other painters, and check the average attendance. The rule of thumb is 10,000 people for every painter working, to stay in steady business. I've culled out some less profitable festivals, but the ones I do are always well worth it, and at the end of the year my main source of income is from these festivals. Craft fairs seem to be the best venues for me. People expect to spend good money on quality crafts, so they aren't too shocked by the prices. Plus there isn't a whole lot for the kids to do, so parents are more likely to indulge them with FPing.

Businesses aren't bad either. My partner and I work at the Bass Pro Shop here on a PPF basis and the money is good if you choose the right weekends. They let us know when they are having special events, and we come out. We work Saturdays all through the summer. There is rarely a line waiting, but I usually come home with a couple hundred dollars (much more on special days) and that's nothing to shake a stick at. It's in a tourist area, indoors which is a huge deal to me, and there's no need to bring a tent or banners, etc. We get to come in when we want, and we can trade off on it if we have bookings that day.

Best of all, THIS is how I get most of my customers! They see me painting at festivals and Bass Pro, take a card or just remember my name, and call me for bookings. This is the best advertising we can do, in my opinion. People are scared by our rates? We can show them first-hand why we are worth it. I'd say 80% of my customers are people who saw me painting somewhere in public.

Anyway, good luck with your PPF events Metina! Please let us know how they turn out for you.

Ok....so oddly, I received an email today about painting at a local mall (for tips only). I think I'm going to take the risk and do it. I'm painting in the morning for mardi gras...then I have the rest of my Saturday open anyway.

They told me to bring tons of flyers and business cards. I'll let you all know how it goes. Rolling Eyes

If it is local, will have lots of traffic, you have nothing else to do and it is a promotional opp. it seems like the thing to do.

Funny how things work. I sent out emails with my offer and then this evening get called for a birthday party. She was on one of the emails I sent out to a school so I guess karma does work.

But on the flip side, I had someone want me to "volunteer" and I had to explain that I couldn't "volunteer" because it would still cost me travel, supplies, insurance ect. I hope he took it ok, but I just can't cover all those costs.

I would rather stay home with my family than pay to work.

Read "When is Free Not Free" PDF

Try not to "volunteer"... unless you are getting something of value to you or your business in return...

I think PPF's are good for getting well known in the community and whether or not I made a profit, I always seemed to get parties out of them. I was hit or miss on how much I earned at them last year, but I think I've learned a bit and know which ones I will and will not do this year!

That is a great article. I printed it out for future reference. Thank you so much for showing it to us.

Yes thanks so much Shannon. I had a visitor's center for the state of WV call and wanted me to paint for WV Day. They were quick to explain that they had no budget AND because it was state property I couldn't charge, but that I was free to hand out my card to all the tourists who dropped in.

hhhmmmm......She was very nice and I just politely explained that I would normally give my card out at every gig and that after I paid for my travel, supplies, insurance ect..that it would actually cost me money to advertise myself to people who weren't even potential customers AND would book a day that might otherwise be a paid gig.

She totally understood and by the end of the conversation she was already thinking of ways to "scrape up" the money. Funny how this happens when you stand up for yourself.

I just can justify paying to work.

Another thought on PPF is doing it with a fellow painter. Just Jenny and I did one together last night and could have probably painted a lot more kids under better circumstances, but we both learned several things from each other, which in itself has a lot of value.

Ahh yes I learned a lot from Metina. Here are some of the things she might have learned from me....Don't forget to bring your brushes, sponges, dump bucket and water. Bringing a chair would be nice too! What was I thinking???? I think that I was so nervous to be in the same place as Metina, I may have unconsciously left stuff at home so I had an excuse not to paint, if I was given the chance. Metina is a wonderful painter, and the kids and adults at the event just loved her. I begged kids to get glitter tats, but they wanted to stay in her line to get painted. I'm looking forward to working with Metina again. I plan on bringing all my painting supplies next time, and a chair if only to sit in and watch her and her awsome painting.

At the end of the event, adults came over and praised her and her work. They said that the 'other face painter' did full faces too, but that hers were more elaborate.

Thanks again Metina for letting me tag along and for making me feel so comfortable while I was there.

Great!
I must admit I do an occasional PPF if its a slow month, or I ma setting up in a new area-I more or less write them off as an advertising experience/ cost if they don't go well.

And I always ask to take a photo of any customers& give them a card 'to email me for the photo' if its slow. And trawl the other stalls seeing who IO can give my card to/ link with. I THINK just about every PPF has netted me a party so far...
