Post by Tygerlion on Thu Dec 16, 2010 6:58 pm

This is great.

I can't stop face painting! It's kind of strange... I can't stop thinking about it. I see I'm not the only one.

I have a BFA in visual arts, but I didn't major in painting, and so I'm kinda surprised with my new found affinity.

I'm so glad I just ordered a bunch of professional face paints. I had no idea they even existed. I was using these wax watercolor crayons, and we couldn't figure out why they kept burning our skin and causing our eyes to sting and our skin to turn red and puffy. It's kind of funny in retrospect, because clearly they aren't meant to be face paints ata ll! But I've gone to several art stores in the past year and asked "Do you have any face paints?" and they always point me to these... It's strange that people aren't more aware of the fact of great face paints. I don't get it. To think all those people are putting that stuff on kids. And they're really not easy to use.

Anyway, this forum totally set me straight and helped me figure this stuff out. I've learned so much already in the last week since I found it -- it's unbelievable. Sooo excited.

Also does anyone know of any good workshops/classes/teachers/conventions/groups and whatnot I should know about in Vancouver, Canada?

Thanks everyone,

Tygerlion Circus

Isn't obsession great? I dream about faces...
I wouldn't feel bad about the paints, although I do with there was more education out there. I was talking to my boyfriend - do you know what his mother used to paint his face with on Halloween - SHOE POLISH!!!! I shudder...
Welcome to the forum, look forward to your posts!

Welcome and have fun! I too, am surprised that more art stores don't carry a bigger selection of quality face paint. They're pricey, but hardly pricier than intro-level quality art supplies.

I can totally relate, did you buy palmer's? Ewwww! That's what I bought the 1st time and said to myself, it should be a lot easier than this, it was just too messy to paint with. LOL It helps when you are using the right stuff.
Welcome!

Welcome. At least you know if you can do a decent job with those crayons you will probably do great with the real thing. All my stores carry is palmer's and three small Snaz packs. Thats what I started with. I was so happy when I got my first order of other brands.

Hey again,

Thanks for your warm welcome everyone!!!

I ended up buying diamond fx palettes (essentials and metallics) and some big and little split cakes, and some paradise colors for bases. Who knows where I'll end up, in terms of brand loyalty and so on, but I'm excited to try these for now.

Can anyone tell me exactly what people use euro vs. mini split cakes for? I'm thinking versatility.
I've seen some tutorials with "one stroke" designs using little cakes. The mini split cakes are a lot smaller than I expected. Do people do other things with them?

Mostly I'm wondering how people use the bigger ones. Do they choose a couple of the colors and blend them for bases, or do they use all the colors, usually?

Oh yeah, and I was previously using "Caran D'Ache" Neocolor II crayons. It took a very long time to do anything, was very fussy, and like I mentioned, also painful..

Sad

To funny, that's the same brand "Caran D'Ache" that I was first introduced to face painting with. Non toxic and water color. Yepper, I couldn't paint anything. I did learn to do a dog face....and far as I know, I didn't harm anyone or scar them for life. Then I met MaMa Clown and my clown world was introduced to makeup cakes by Mehron and Snaz, and sponges and brushes and face painting like I never even dreamed of.
Amazing how we get started.

Welcome to my obsession!
You will have so much fun using real face paints!
I started with a snazz palatte, and the tiny wells were infuriating, as much as I liked the color and coverage. Now I have a variety of brands and colors.
I do have a large DFX leaf cake, and I'm still learning how to use it. I have not, as yet, used the entire thing for one design. I usually blend 2-3 of the colors and use the other colors for details.

Hey welcome! Where are you exactly in the Lower Mainland? I'm in Mission and know a lot of the best facepainters around. I started this obsession just under 2 years ago, but am a formally trained artist so the new medium isn't a big leap. It's totally awesome though!

I love facepainting, but I also love teaching. I just started teaching some classes out here in the valley. I'll probably be expanding in the new year. We'll see Very Happy

We just had Lucie Brouillard come out from Alberta last month and had a couple amazing face and body art workshops with her. She recently won the world bodypainting championship in Europe.

We don't have a formal 'guild' or anything yet, but I'm sure I'll be starting one soon. I'm a professional event planner and instructor at a local university and love to network. I'm hoping to get the 'Bodyssey' convention out here next time it's in the West. We just had it in Calgary and so it'll be in Ontario next year or so.

Some of us get together for jams occasionally, but nothing planned in the immediate future. I don't know if anyone else formally teaches facepainting. I teach through the school system very basic classes, mostly to educate on safety and have some fun with the kids. PM me your contact info and I'll keep you in the loop of anything more coming up.

This forum is a great place to start an youtube of course. Practice, practice, practice too. Very Happy

BC rocks by the way. At bodyssey in Calgary we took the top prizes for bodypainting. Yvonne Boyd from the Kootnays took 1st, Nina Moore from Whistler took 2nd, and I got 3rd cheers
