List of designs OR display board?

Post by Frenchie the Face Painter on Wed Dec 29, 2010 10:31 pm

Does anyone use a list that people can choose from rather than a Photo display board?

Why yes, I do. I find this approach allows me to offer design suggestions without locking me into a specific version. I can usually provide the same theme as cheek art or full or half masks. I'm not sure that it is the wisest way, but since I'll paint most anything requested, I may not be a good example to follow anyway. jocolor

I never used to, but I started recently using just a menu board with a list of full face and a list of cheek/arm designs available. It allows me to be more creative, using the colors from their outfits, etc. When I used pictures, I would always get complaints from kiddos because I didn't use the right color, missed a line here or there, etc. I hate painting the same design twice at one party, so I am always changing up colors and small details to make each unique. I can't do this if they see a picture and expect the exact design. I do still have a portfolio of my work on display with a disclaimer on each page that says "Display purposes only - please see menu board for designs available at today's event".

I go back and forth on that one... If I know it is an event with a TON of kids, I go with the list, maybe a butterfly is a full face, maybe it is just a half face,, depends on my line and gives me more flexibility,

If it is a pay per face or something like a fair, I use a huge display board to sell it.

I use a list of Word Art at big festivals that want me to limit my designs. This way I can choose how detailed I get, etc. I only use a board at PPF events.

I use a board with just words on it. I started out this way due to lack of models to take pictures of....I've grown to like it and might keep it instead of specific pictures. It gives me the flexibility to make the designs however I want instead of being locked into a particular picture the child sees.

I use a word list too. I have a couple pics in my gallery of examples (but I've changed them up a bit since then).
I do still have a portfolio of my work on display with a disclaimer on each page that says "Display purposes only - please see menu board for designs available at today's event".
That is a great line and I think it's going to have to go on my portfolio book when I have enough photos to put in it! I know that even with henna, my really large pieces that may take hours would not be able to be done in a festival/larger crowd type atmosphere but I like to have my book of bridals and larger body pieces on display so the clients can see your skills. For me this is especially important when the circumstances mean you have to do smaller or less complicated designs. I'm not sure if the same line of thinking applies to FP.

Great thread...I'm convinced that when I do put it 'all on the line' and go public, word signs will probably be for me.

Re: List of designs OR display board?

Post by Amanda on Sun Jan 02, 2011 10:30 pm

I use a tall sign I designed and had printed on that plastic corrugated lawn sign board... it is multi purpose with all the info and rules in one place. It's about 4 feet tall so it's hard to miss. I usually place it right where I want my line to start... that way no one can say they didn't see it! The time sign is a separate piece I add on to the top of it when I'm at larger functions. I covered the circles for the time and also the white shape on the Today I will be Painting section in acetate, which works with a dry erase marker. When I'm somewhere where I'm painting lots of people and limited designs I write out what I'm painting (IE: Princess eyes, flaming eyes, butterfly, etc.). I can just wipe it off clean when I'm done then. I will occasionaly have someone ask "what's monster horns?" and I just say... "let me paint it on you and you'll find out!"

I also have two photo books with pictures of all my designs in them to show options to the kids for full face and bigger designs. If they can pick anything from my book I write *Anything in the book!* on the sign. I usually can have one book floating around the party and one by me in case I need to reference a picture.

I've almost made photo signs a few times, but essentially I've been too lazy. Also, with having photo album type books I can easily (and frequently) swap photos out if I start painting things better or different or want to add to it. I like the versatility. Although, I haven't done any pay per face festival gigs, where having big pictures around would probably be helpful... guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it!

(these signs are both the same width... just didn't come thru that way on the upload)

Lately I haven't been using anything--this works for me in the sense that it allows me to expand my imagination but it works against me in the sense that I have nothing to show potential paintees (and their parents) unless I have painted myself. I do plan to have a photo album of sorts in the near future just as a means of providing suggestions but if a paintee sits in my chair knowing exactly what they want, I have no need for a board.

Thanks... I made that when I first got started, and still use it alot and haven't found much I'd change. It's been helpful, although I still don't have an ideal stand for it!

When I am painting alone, I have pictures for people to see and have not had anyone fussy about things being exactly the same. But when painting with other people, it is definitely a good idea to just have a list because the designs of two painters are rarely even close and kids will get fussy about major differences.

I was going to say something but then I say your sign Amanda and was blown away! It is so professional!! I might have to steal your concept Wink
I have never had menuboards for facepainting, although over Christmas I had printed out a few faces and had them sitting on my table.. not that they HAD to choose from but there for inspiration.
I have just got a banner printed with some of my favourite faces but I am now thinking I should have put on some faces I know are quick and popular at the larger events, people see painting I have done before and naturally want just that.

I just painted a free function with a couple of other face painters, one of whom brought pictures. I am MORE determined than ever to only use words! I had kids saying"I want the crown with the blue jewel from this photo, but the pink eyes and purple lips from the other photo! And can you add the eye liner from yet this other photo?"

I like it much better when they can only say "I want a princess crown" and I find out what colors they like! They are always pleased with the design and delighted with the surprise, rather than feeling that they didn't get exactly what they ordered!

when painting with other people, words are the best option.... when painting on your own, your display board is your best advertising to pull people into your booth instead of someone else's

From this side of the paintbrush, I love the idea of just offering a list of designs for the kids to choose from. It gives creative freedom, sets no exact extectations... lots and lots of good stuff. But as a parent walking around a festival with my kids, I think I'd have to see something more than word art to wrench ten bucks from my pocket!
