Getting in to Belly's!.........I think.

Post by WickedBA on Sat Jan 01, 2011 11:55 am

So, Most of you have seen me around for awhile. I love face painting but I am a perfectionist in most things I do and just haven't gotten the confidence in my painting yet. I really want to get into full body painting and belly's but dont know if I am ready. I know a girl who is 8 months pregnant and last night she was talking about how she has seen people do it and she things painted belly are very cute. I really want to offer to do it. What do you all think? You have seen some of my work. should I go for it or should I stick to my basic for a bit longer? afro

Michelle, you should GO FOR IT! I think you'd do great. Remember, you started somewhere with face painting. Belly painting is the same. Hurry, she's 8 months & will be popping soon Very Happy

I just did my first baby tummy, and it was lots of fun and wasn't nearly as intimidating as I thought it would be. Definitely go for it!

I am a total beginner and I have about 5 pregnancy bellies lined up for my regular henna biz. I've told a couple of them that if they have not popped by the time the henna has worn off after the blessing way ceremony, that they can have the belly FP for free so I may add them to my portfolio.

A belly is just a much larger 'face' with no eyes! I will be offering that service with my FP if I find I like the results and think I'm ok to charge. MIND you in body art, I've had alot of practice painting bellies with henna, so I've already developed where to sit, etc. If you already have a free model, AND a friend, I say dive in and get photos! Free practice right there!!! You'll know after doing it the first time if you found it easy, hard, can't figure out where to sit, etc. If you do it, it was not difficult and you liked the results, then dive in! As for full body, I think that is a more difficult proposition and takes alot of paint so it's almost an investment to learn it. I will not be offering body painting until I learn more technique and am hoping to pick up tips in March.

Now keep in mind, I'm no pro and I have only been taking FP to my paid henna gigs to get in some practice, so I'm far from a FP font of knowledge! It's just my two cents! Hopefully some pros will come by and let me know if I'm way off base or in the ballpark!

I have seen so much improvement between your first picture to the one on your avatar.

I would love to do a belly Smile

How do you practice or layout a design? and I see a lot of them outlined first, do you use whit paint or a pencil of some sort?

I usually plan out the design on paper & have photo references either printed or on my laptop computer. I draw out the basics of the design on the belly while mom is standing. I use a paintbrush with white paint. Then I let her sit/lay down & paint from there. I give her a lot of ops for breaks, snacks & drinks. Take pics as you go. Relax & have fun. You'll find it's loads of fun & not so intimidating once you get into the groove!

You only get better with practice Very Happy

I like to dive right in myself. I like the added 'pressure' I think when I really haven't a clue what I'm doing LOL. I did my first full body paint in a competition at a convention in Calgary and came away with 3rd place! I plan the design 'loosely' in a sketch and print off 'google' images for reference on specific details.

I find belly painting almost spiritual. There's an anticipation of the bundle of joy for the mom and you're helping her have a very unique memory of a significant stage in her child's life. I love it when the baby kicks and pokes where I'm painting. It's a very addicting form of painting. I guess I'm a 'belly art' junkie LOL.

So go for it and have fun!

Because of the encouragement here I did my first event for face painting and yes, I am so glad I "dove in". I think you should offer! If you both go into it with an attitude of exploration, I so think that the result can only be magical!
