Welcome! I'm a homeschooling mom as well. It's been great, teaching the kids about how to run a business in addition to that pesky algebra. LOL.

Amy, welcome to the forum! I've been homeschooling for 15 years & face painting for 5 yrs. I have 1 in college & 4 I'm still homeschooling. And yes, it goes from algebra to running a business to how to twist the latest balloon in our home(with a dash of ballet in between Very Happy )

Wow, You guys are amazing! Is it hard to homeschool? I thought of that when Amanda was born but I wasn't brave enough, I wasn't born/raised in the USA so the thought of teaching her stuff wrong and with the wrong accent made me change my mind. I even had a hard time helping my 5th grader with divisions, we did it very different in Venezuela but hey, I learned the way they do it here.
You guts are truly a 24/7 mom!

I think how hard it is depends on how willing you are to do things in a way that is best for your child. YES school at home is hard as it takes many of the awful things from school and brings them home.. It is counter to how many, many people learn and so it is like hitting your head against a wall.

There are much better ways and each family is different. Mine learn by living life. They watch a lot of educational tv by their choice and love to learn on the computer. I sometimes wish I had more money to give them a fuller richer life but we do what we can with what we have.

As for having a hard time helping your kid in math they do it different in school now then when I was a kid too. They call it New math. I remember trying to help my eldest before we pulled her out and thinking this is the most backwards messed up way to try to learn math. It does not even make sense.

Now we learn math through practical application and it makes far more sense to all of us.

As a homeschool mom of 15 years I can say there are good days & bad days. Each kid learns differently & one curriculum will work for one child & not another. It's just being intune with what's best for each child. My older kids are mostly self taught with their curriculum. I just check their work, do corrections, & give instruction when needed. Mind you, they are teens. My 17 yr old is taking a few courses at the community college, so she's really on her way. The youngest is 9 and has some educational delays. I have to sit with him & minimize all distractions. Some days he's right on & other days it's as if he's forgotten everything. I still believe he's better off at home & he'd have been lost in the public school. I have nothing wrong with public school(my hubby will be teaching there next year) and I know some amazing & dedicated teachers. I just hope the system will eventually let the teachers teach & not fit into a standardized test(sorry for my soapbox:-)

Thanks for the quick response, I have thought about my daughter a lot after reading your replies, last year she was tested for learning disabilities and according to the state she wasn't a candidate for special ed.
She is in 5th grade and will be going to Middle school next year, she struggles a lot, specially in math and even though she is not a especial ed student she gets extra help at school. I have tried to explain things at home and we clash, not sure what it is but we always end up getting upset. Her dad is a lot better explaining things to her.

Maggie, I so understand. My oldest & I clashed during homework time. Then I realized, I had her when she was burnt out from a long day that was getting longer. It got a lot better when we brought it home. Another option is if you can find a teen or adult who's good in math & can tutor. We've used that option before.
