Snazaroo iPhone App - review

Post by TheGildedCat on Thu Jan 06, 2011 4:55 am

I received an email inviting me to check out the Snazaroo iPhone app:
http://www.snazaroo.com/assets/campaigns/email/iphone/index.html

This application starts off with four options:
1. Let's face paint
2. Guides
3. Gallery
4. Online store

The first option, let's face paint, requires that you either take a photo of someone's face using your iphone or select a photo of a face from your phone's gallery. There is an eye and mouth guide to ensure proper photo placement. You can "paint" on the photo using your finger. There are options to adjust the pixel size, paint colour, and opacity. Frankly, this is like "painting" with a crude version of MS Paint, only you have less control because you're using your finger to drag the mouse. There is no option for "thick to thin" lines nor teardrops...the basis of face painting!

If you choose to place a guide over the face, it superimposes a mediocre Snazaroo design which you can then "paint" on top of..why? Not sure because the design is already there.

In the Guides section, you have a three-step "how-to" for each pre-fab design. If you have ever purchased a Snaz kit which includes their "how-to" pamphlet, you already have these designs with as much detail. These are not professional caliber face-painting designs. They are designed for someone who has never picked up a brush, nor face paint.

The gallery is any "painted" designs you have saved from the first option.

The online store takes you to their app-version of their website with prices in pounds. It's clearly optimized for a browser, not an iphone which makes navigating frustrating.

In short, this is a goofy little app...amusing for about 2.5 seconds but pretty well useless to a professional face painter.

hmmmm sounds like its all about product advertising....
Guess it's good to jump on the app bandwagon, but really when there is like 2,000,000+ apps you would want to make a good one that stands out or really it's just a waste of your time and theirs.
Did you have to pay for it?
Will people have to pay for it in the future or is it just a free app?

Thanks for reviewing it - these things always spike my interest and it helps when I don't have to do all the investigating.
Very well written review!

I downloaded it after being sent a notice a week or so ago. It's definitely for hobbyists or kids to play with. The idea is cute and novelty, but no use to an actual face painter. I'm sure it's mostly just promotional. I can see where kids who've been painted would enjoy playing with the app.

@Tash, it's free. There's no way I would have paid for it.

My only thought on this product was...
Why in the world would Snaz spend all this money on the development of an app when their web site is so incredibly DISMAL at every turn. Looking to put modern technology to use? Try the WEB! Twisted Evil
