Help! EMERGENCY

Post by Frenchie the Face Painter on Thu Jan 06, 2011 7:23 pm

I just got a job tomorrow night with a local artist face painting his Actors faces just like they are in his paintings, They call it LIVE ART....anyway I do not have enough paint in my kit....the only place in town that sell paints carries BEN NYE products only....Has anyone ever used this brand?, when I bought some called "magicak aquacake" they were awful to paint with they never seemed to get a nice creamy texture or only for a very short period of time then dryed up quick and you had to add more water until again you could finally use it, It went on very blotchy.....so.......anyways.............Is there a type of Ben Nye paint anyone has used with success? They had about 20 different types, the catalog didn't help at all....HELP!!! Can anyone tell me what might work in the Ben Nye Brand?
thanks

most of Ben Nye is cream makeup to my knowledge. I think the aquacakes are the only "face paint" that they have... but I could be wrong.

The BenNye MagicCakes are a very different consistency than all the other paints. They do well with a sponge, but not so great for line work. I don't know that they can work up into a creamy consistency. The nice thing is that they dry to powder finish so they withstand humidity better.

hmm, I have used Ben NYE and I like it... but it's waaaaaaay way too expensive because it is classed as professional makeup.
It maybe that I like it because I use paradise, which behave like make-up too. What is your usual brand of choice?
You need to go into the store and ask them to sample it with you... I had a lady open a sample and painted some on the back of my hand to get an idea... the metalic sea green is just gorgeous.
Where are you located?
most cities in most countries have snaz in store somewhere. I know in the U.S.A Micheals stocks it. Here in Oz Showface stocks it and DFX in store, and eckersley's ( artstore) has snaz in store.
whenever I run out and have no time to order more off the net, i buy the snaz in store.
If I had a job tomorrow night I would order overnight delivery.... may be that's not an option for you?

I tried the Ben Nye magiccake and they were horrible - just like you described.

I use a lot of Ben Nye cream theatrical make-up. Have you considered using that instead? It needs to be powdered to set, but lots of colour choice and as an oil based cosmetic you can apply with a sponge or brush and blend to your heart's content? Baby powder works for setting (it is neutral colourwise). Use a powder brush or puff to apply the powder and dust off the excess.

It may not be perfect for you but if all you have access to is Ben Nye it might work.

I've done lots of work using it - this design is all done in cream make-up (creams applied with sponge and brush, and lip/eye liners) http://www.shannonfennell.com/backdragon.jpg you have a lot of control with oil based products.

Go to a bookstore, go to the kids section & get a Klutz Face Painting book. It has wolfe paint & might help.

i like the magicakes for bases, for line work, it takes a bit more work and water, but it does work.

my only issues is the light green, they dont seems to work well wet or dry.

I do like how fast they dry.... tooo fast to appy glitter on wet paint, but good if you need to go over it with another color.

Hope that helps
