Post by Ruth on Sat Jan 08, 2011 12:16 pm

Here are some of my practice stuff...some inspired by Mark Reid. What do u think and how can I improve my line work?

line work was better for me if I used a size 4 brush. At least untill I was able to control my lines better. That way if you get a little heavy handed you don't end up with really big lines. I STILL will sit in front of the TV and practice lines, swirls and teardrops on my legs. The only way to improve is practice practice practice!!

That said, I LOVE the coloring on your butterfly and on the top design.

Those are great!!!! I'm so glad you posted some of your work - the lines are tough aren't they? Those thick to thin lines are a booger to make happen - what size are you using? I agree with Bec - I love that #4, then use a #2 for the detail. I loved the Mark Reid brushes I bought from Metinas...I found the sable is too light for my newbie touch (that said - the sable is my choice when working on "mature" skin as it doesn't pull so much).

Also - when I'm "in the zone" my lines are so much better - but when I'm thinking about them or in the beginning of practice session or when I'm nervous (my first gig) they are sloppy and wide because I think I'm thinking too much with my left brain and not just letting the part of me that knows what is doing just come out. My guess is all that can help that is continued practice and confidence - which you should have soon - that butterfly would make any little girl just jump for joy!
