what to charge for a library

Post by silverdragon19th on Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:55 pm

hi everyone, my name is Michelle I am sadly a lurker. I had a phone call yesterday it is from a library, this would be mine and my partner's first real gig. I know this is beating a dead horse but i was wondering what i should charge? we are the only ones here in Nicholasville there is one in Lexington and one that is out of Louisville that has a apprentice that works in Lex. I think their going rates are $100 a hour, I want to give discount price to the library. My partner and I where throwing around the idea of $80 a hour because we are just getting started and for non profits it would be half so $40 a hour. Is that to low, we are not trying to undercut the others on purpose it is just that we need a little more practice. what do you all think any feedback would be great.

Welcome to non-lurkerdom! Smile How many hours does the library want to hire you for? $40 per painter isn't bad for a multiple hour job with two painters who are just starting out and want to give a discount to a non-profit. $50 per hour is better. If you need the job and want the experience under your belt, work with them as needed on the price, but make sure they know it's a discounted rate in case they call back next year and want the same price.

I got hired (thanks to some fp friends) to do a halloween event at the library. Actually "friends of the library" paid for it and at $80/hr for 4 hours. my normal start off rate for just fp is $100 so that was my discount to them.

Wow. If you're setting your regular rate at $80 and you only charge the library $40 that's a 50% discount. Huge! I don't think I'd go so low. The thing to do is to lead with your regular rate, "we usually charge $80 an hour per artist" -let them gasp- then say that, because you support their cause blah blah, you are prepared to offer them a __% discount. That way they know what a deal they are actually getting.
