Greetings from The Peppermint Pony

Post by ponygirl on Mon Jan 24, 2011 10:21 am

Thank you all for inviting me - my brain is super-saturated with wonderful information and tips already.
My name is Angela, I have a pony ride and face painting business in central Maryland called The Peppermint Pony. I also do sculpture, that business is called Bramble Hollow Fine Arts. Both those businesses have Facebook pages, which is where the majority of my photos are stationed at this point - as well as on my personal FB page which has many photos accessible to all.

I've been face painting for going on three years, I just about wore out my Snazaroo pro kit and came upon this website in the search for more and better. Wow! Just did my first job with my new DFX paints and it was a revelation. Also, ironically, forgot my brushes and luckily had one small new set of Loews craft brushes and did an entire job (butterflies to Wolfe Bros Mr. Hyde) with four brushes.
I don't mind throwing money at this to be the best I can be - I am a gear-hound in all my areas of interest, so I'm sure you'll be seeing my stuff on the trade page as I pull my hair out when things don't perform as promised.
I also am struggling with the lack of parallel colors, between Snaz and the other manufacturers - so I'll be experimenting with replicating those out of my DFX and Paradise..should be interesting.
Unfortunately, I'm not very creative and I do a lot of copying...apologies to those whose work I've snagged, this year I *PROMISE* to expand my creative horizons and branch into my own signature look. Thanks again to all you who have inspired me over the years - nice to now have names to the 'faces', LoL.

I look forward to the camaraderie and friendship of networking here - it is SUCH a passion, and a relief to find others who can't get off to sleep as well - tossing and turning with images of line and blend and sparkle.

Thanks- I have sooo many hats. I also do carriage driving, so have amassed quite a collection - it's how we dress for shows and outings - as if we were at a conservative wedding. Of course, last summer in all the 100 degree weather, it was all skimpy sundresses and flip-flops, under those hats.
I used to do carriage driving at my parties before I figured out that it wasn't worth the extra insurance once I started paying for help (the first year, I did it ALL myself - ponies, rides, carriage and painting).
Hats are great - they literally save our skin ;-). The kids love them too..and sometimes I feel I'm lucky to not have them snatched off my head, the moms love them so much too!

Angela, you should include your location, that way if there are painting guilds or jam sessions, other painters will know where you are. I know you're probably not near McCall Idaho with 100 degree temps!

Welcome Angela, I really love that picture on your avatar! Isn't it amazing when all you use is snazaroo and then you try DFX for the 1st time, WOW! right?

Re: Greetings from The Peppermint Pony

WOW is right, Miz Maggie! I think I cried, actually....it never occurred to me that the face painting on the Snazaroo website wasn't actually (GASP) done with Snazaroo!!
Night_and_Day.
I'm obsessed enough with this to still feel really badly for all my old customers, LoL, as well as for myself for feeling it was 'me' somehow. Sometimes, if the humidity and temps and breeze cooperated...you could sometimes get a decent black line. But all the planets had to align, you had to kiss the right amulet in the proper direction of the sun etc etc.

I feel like a racehorse champing at the bit right now. I have had zero work this winter, pple got so burned by the snow we got last year I have had no pony bookings since December and I really haven't done much in the way of marketing the face painting-only parties...this weekend is a big test, a three day Pet Expo, pony rides and hopefully face painting too. I've never worked in the same place for more than two hours at a stretch, and as I'm recovering from mono it will be an epic effort.

Hopefully this Mad Hatter Magic Shop will ship my stuff in time to arrive for the weekend - I'm rounding out my DFX with some more Paradise for bases even though the smell is overwhelming to me. Bought a FatMax, as I usually face-paint off the back of my carriage, with the kiddos facing backwards in the front seat - no room for that at the Expo. My dad and I are playing with solutions for bracing the open lid - I'm tempted to just jerry-rig it with my camera monopod for the time being.

I just noticed that the pictures on my website seem so lame - I usually upload pics to FB and then forget about it! I'm going to swap that page style to a slideshow - I have so much more to show these days.

Thanks for the feedback! Sure I'll be posting soon...I've been in online communities for 10 years now, I needed a distraction from my troublesome single status and this will be perfect - a jumpstart for a new season of fun.

OH, and I got so lucky with that picture. I had just (stupidly) bought this monster Nikon D700 with the 28-200 lens, and there was a pro working at the party as a guest.(or visa versa?). Anyhoo, I handed her the camera and she grumbled about the length of the lens, then took this in a series of shots. I think it is priceless. So much fun...when I think of the things I've done with that camera in just a few months, maybe not such a bad idea after all ;-)

Anglea, double WOW! affraid I always felt like I was missing something or I was doing it wrong. I spend many hours looking at pictures and watching videos and felt so disappointed when I tried to do lines and those beautiful dots often used.
Then I found this forum and discovered there were other paints besides snazaroo LOL When I 1st got my shipment of DFX paint I opened the box and got the black cake out to try... cheers I felt like the angels were singing LOL

BTW I looked at your pictures and I think they are great, not sure what you are talking about Willis Wink Would love to see your new stuff.

Good luck with the pony fair and getting your shipment in time. Oh! and I hope you are feeling better in no time.
28-200 lens, now I am drooling lol I have a rebel xti and don't really know how to use it. I want to take a photography class.
