Browns suggestions

Post by maggie on Sat Feb 05, 2011 10:41 am

Hi, just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what browns are good.

I need a dark, medium and light brown that are good for bases but mostly for line work.

Does anyone has the Wolfe skinz colors palette? is it worth it?

Thanks so much for all your help!

I use my skin palette all of the time. great for bears, trees, dogs, zombies, shadows, outlining.. whatever. I would just buy the bigger amount of paint though, you'll run out of the little ones pretty quickly(3 months for me.)

Wolfe has a good pallet that covers light skin all the way to a brown that's almost black. Great for dogs to zombies.

Thanks so much for the input. I am not very busy these days so I think that pallet would last me a year if I don't get my tush in gear and get more gigs.
I also prefer to get the big cakes, I am looking on getting maybe 3.
What are your favorite from those and do you have any pictures?
Thanks again!

BTW, The new avatar picture if Freakishly Awesome!

I don't use browns that much, but I think it's because I don't like the browns that I have-- Paradise. The dark brown is to dark and the light brown is a weird ashy skin color. Bleck! I like the browns that Lauri used in her "antlers" split cake in the "transfer all my paints" thread. DFX I think.

Thanks for the info Sophie! I read somewhere the dfx essential brown is very dark. I really like snazaroo light and brown colors but don't like them for line work.

Hope this helps Maggie
Diamond fx essential brown is very dark, I just got the pardise coral and was dying to put my brush in it Very Happy and the antlers split is the one i made, metallic gold is next to the brown and I think thats why it works.

Thank you for the picture Lauri! It does not look that dark though. I want a brown for branches, chocolate, bears, if I paint people, etc. I love the antler split.

That paradise coral is gorgeous.

I put some black next to the brown for comparison. The brown is definately darker in person.
Is it weird that I was just sitting here with the paint still on my arm???? lol!

I may be weird, but I love my Paradise browns. I just ordered some TAG skin tones that I can't wait to get, but my Paradise has been great for me so far. The only skin tones I bought were the light skin colors since I'm happy with my browns. What types of things are you painting that make you not like the Paradise browns? Just curious. I feel like I might be missing out.

Sophie (or anyone with paradise!) can you give us a pic of your paradise browns?

I love the smell of paradise!! I just put paradise beach berry on my arm for the first time, it is my new favorite color! This picture from the forum shop doesnt even come close to how gorgeous it is in person.

I like my paradise light brown. I love the DFX essential brown for the darker stuff. I use the snaz brown for medium tones. I love my DFX skin tone palette too.

So, the I found the wolfe skinz palette for $16 I figure I can try it and pic the favorite and buy the next time.
DFX palette is 28 bucks affraid I rather buy 3 big cakes instead of the palette.

DFX essential brown is nice but it is very red.

Anyone else???

The palette is worth it for me. I get 6 colours in a small contained area so I don't have to have so many big cakes open. It's really useful for when I'm painting a face or baby on a belly. I have lots of choices for shading.

Brown isn't a colour I go through a lot of. I'm still on my original DFX essential brown, snaz brown and paradise light brown. I've been painting for almost 2 years. Very Happy

Here's some examples of the DFX skintone palette and DFX essential brown...

The monkey has a lot of DFX essential brown in it.
The tree is mostly DFX essential brown and some paradise light brown.
The baby is all DFX skintone palette. Also for the eyeball. I use the paradise light brown a lot for shadows like for 3D spiders or making the leaves on the belly here look dimensional.
