Okay, so I painted this mermaid today and let me tell you, I HATE painting people. Can anyone please help, how do you make them look real? Thanks!

Precisely the reason why I'm taking that kind of thing off of my sample board... No more mermaids, fairies, etc... They just never look right.

Cute Mermaid!

Don't feel bad Maggie, people ARE hard to paint. It really takes a lot of practice and repetition. It's important to notice how joints and limbs bend; our arms don't more that twice (at the elbow and the wrist). One thing to also remember, especially if you're painting a feminine figure, is that there are NO straight lines... women have curves and are supple. Too many straight lines and angles don't look natural. Another key point is proportion; trust me, the head is not as big as most people think it is, and the body is not as short.

When talking proportions, the torso should generally be about 2.5 times the length of the head, and the legs 3.5-4 times the length of the head. the hands themselves should fall about mid thigh, and be 3/4 as long as the head.

And wow, that ended up being longer than I meant for it to be...
Well, I hope that helps, but if all else fails, I recommend getting ahold of drawing books about drawing people, that's what really helped me.

It was your first time?! Well, then GIRL, why are you so upset? That's fantastic for a first time painting a person! I can't wait to see what that little mermaid will look like once you've got some practice painting people under your belt! Keep up the good work!

The only way I have managed to get around painting people is to cover up most of them. The face I leave blank and paint hair across it. Mostof the body I try to hide under clothing and arms I just do 2 teardrops and a blob for the hand.

Daizy, really love your fairy! It's so sparkling!
Maggie, your mermaid is very nice. I recognize your thing about people. I learned that it is important to draw the eyes lower (halfway the head) and further from each other to have a nice expression on the face.
Riana, beautiful phoenix, I like the idea of using tattoos as example.

Thank again Punky! Smile

Daizy, you make it sound so easy and when I see your fairy my jaw drops, it is truly amazing! Can I try this?

Great job on the phoenix Riana!

Thanks Nancy, I will play around to see what I like best:)

Thank you so much Rae!
It was funny because I was in the kitchen painting and remembering how to paint the fairy and every time I laid a color I would say Crap! this is the color of Daizie's dress! Crap! the hair is red like hers!
I am going to paint another one today, I think I'll try the mermaid again.
