OMG! I totally got to paint w/ Mark Reid tonight!!

Post by AllieDawn on Fri Feb 11, 2011 12:38 am

Don't know if I'm posting in the right category-but I had to share!!
There is a local FP guild that meets (well, local is an hour away from me) once a month, and tonight Mark Reid was the teacher! As soon as I showed up he sat across the table and did a one on one practice strokes mini lesson with me. (coolness!)
He painted a valentines design on me for the class. And later, I asked him a question about how he did the fire on his other lesson and he sat right down and showed me, on my arm!!
Silly, but I've had a great night!! He is doing a private class on Sunday, and I am gonna try to make it to that. cheers

I am so jealous. I may be attending a workshop in April with him for 2 days. But, it is gonna cost me around $700 when all said and done.
I have heard that he can tend to me rude to the female students. But, it seems like he was pretty cool and super willing to help out.
Did you have to pay for this guild?
I love you

I had 4 days of classes with Mark and he was pretty cool to paint with. Mind you, he won't tell you your linework is good if it's not...he's very abrupt in his mannerisms, but he was a perfect(ly sometime grouchy) gentleman. My classes were one-on-one, so that might be a determining factor. That and what I call the "silly factor". The silly factor is the level of silliness that some of the ladies in general classes showed. We had a couple of giggly girls who were trying to be flirty and demure with him while he was teaching (i.e., giggling and making goo goo eyes instead of doing what they were being instructed to do) and he put on the coarse sandpaper gloves for dealing with them, but he was civil with the people who were serious about learning from him, he was just very point of fact.

Kim, if you can wing it, I'd do it while he's still traveling and teaching, you won't regret it!

As far as guild go, I think that depends. Our guild requires a yearly membership due to offset the costs of operation and things like that. When we start to have instructors come in, the members will have to pay a subsidized amount for the classes because we can't ethically use the dues to pay for an instructor unless EVERYONE agrees ... and that depends on whether a person likes that particular instructor ... we'll see. I guess the amount of money in the coffers also plays a part as well.

@Psalmbook-here are only a couple pics, I will have a few better ones of him later when the lady who was taking them when he was painting me will send them to me.

@glitterfly- This was my first guild meeting. I did not have to pay anything tonight, but the usual guild group fee is only $35/year. Not too bad!! He is offering a last-minute class for us while he is in town, and whoever wanted to sign up can go on Sunday. Full day for $100, and half day for $60.

@Lady Jayde-YES, you hit it right on the head! He is very nice, he simply has a "dry" sense of humor and could be proabably taken to be rude. But he is very serious about his work! It was a lot of fun, and he was very willing to help.

Post by Mehndi Masala on Fri Feb 11, 2011 12:11 pm

That actually works for me! Smile

I'm a fun loving person and when I teach, I tend to be joke-y and flamboyant -but to the point- when it comes to the lecture portion. When it's one-on-one or technique, I'm pretty serious. From what I'm hearing not quite "Reid" serious, but I'm not likely to be overly fun or funny at that point...I am pretty passionate about that I am doing. If I am paying for classes, I want to learn, ask questions ABOUT painting...if I want to hear about his personal life or opinions, I will wait for a 'meet the artist' session or ask if he would like to join me for dinner.

I *am* the lampshade on the head person ( cheers ), but there is a time and place.
@ Lady Jayde - I am sooooo hungry to see him, Wolfe and Pashur. I have a looong list of 'wanna sees' as there are so many truly talented artists out there, but those three are on my 'must see' list right now....WHICH I am sure will grow!! LOL

Very serious! What ever you do...don't lose sight of your focal points, lol! I survived bootcamp 20 years ago (why does that sound soooo prehistoric?!!) so Mark's barks were minor nips to me! I'm just kidding, he's really a cool person to learn from, lol.

Love Mark Reid, love learming from him. My daughter is completely taken by him.....and he was great with her. She loves being painted by him. I dig his personality very cool person....if you don't "get" him yeah he might come off as a bit abrupt/abrasive.....no harm intended by it.

Yah...I am pretty excited. I cannot believe the Wolfe Brothers and Mark Reid are going to Toronto (about 4 hours away for me) within a month of eachother. Just gotta come up with the cash for Mark's class.
I wish Nix would come this way to teach. I love his style as well.
I would love to meet Amy Grigg as well. She seems so down to earth and oh so talented.
I would also love to take a class by Ashley. She is amazing.

funny thing is when I walked in he said, "Alicia!! Did you friend request me on fb today?"- I was like, yeah? haha. funny that he recognized me.. I feel important!! Smile The lady there said he's got like, 150 pending requests so I should feel special, lol. He said he only added me cause he saw the info on my page...I guess referring to being the owner of a face painting biz.

Oh, and BTW-he let me use his brushes........LOVE THEM!! Gonna have to go buy a couple of those. Available only on Mehron.com

He is one of my favorites because of his nature. If I'm paying big bucks to learn from him, I don't want chatty people not paying attention distracting the class... and he makes sure you have got the idea. There was another like him at FABAIC (I can never remember her name, but she looks 12, but doesn't mind calling people to attention!)

The brushes you're talking about... are they different than the ones in Metina's shop? She sells Mark Reid Signature brushes, and they are awesome! Very Happy

Alicia, sooo coool!!

I'm super excited to be going on a 3 day workshop with Rebecca Anthony (aka Becstar) in May. Can hardly wait! I'm so new to this world, but not many peops coming out to Western Australia, (as far as I know) so unless I travel across the country I'm not likely to get much chance at finding such wonderfull help. I think Ambah might be coming out later in the year so desperatley hoping I don't miss out on that.

Was it Kerry Ann? She's another painter/instructor who's very serious about her art and teaching her students. I really loved the way she kept things on track during a class I took with her in CT, even with the distractions present. And yes...she could totally pass for 12 or 13 at first glance, lol.

Lucky you Alicia, I will one day do a workshop with him.

Rae I've done a workshop with Bec she's so lovely & talented. Also there is http://www.limelightco.com.au/about-us that is in WA. Nelly owns it & they have had the Wolfe Bros there to teach. You may like to have a look at the site & touch base with Nelly re any up coming workshops.
