I have a problem painting dolfins

Post by gizmootje3 on Thu Mar 10, 2011 8:40 am

Who can help me paint an easy dolfin. Question
My dolfins look more like an orka than like a dolfin. Sad
Has anyone got an step-by-step example for me?

(please excuse me if my english isn't very well lol! )

Greetings Diana

I use a flat brush about a 10 krylon and a split cake. If you start thicker for the face and then get thinner towards the tail it won't look fat like a whale. Make sure the fin and the tail have the right shape. If your fin is too pointy up and down it will look like a shark and the same for the tail, it needs to be more "girly " and flow rather than a c shape like a shark. Then for the nose just a small round stroke will make the nose of your dolphin.

Split cakes are great for highlighting and they come in great dolphin colors.

I totally know what you're going through. I have always loved dolphins but when I was just starting out, I couldn't paint or draw them to save my life. I finally got good at them after looking at lots of pictures of real dolphins and breaking them down into easier shapes.

Before I got my split paletes, This is what my dolphins ended up looking like:

And to to that, I just imagined the body of the dolphin as being a long, narrow teardrop. You can make one of those by just dragging your brush as you make the teardrop. then I made a smaller, slightly curved teardrop in the middle with the pointy part pointing up for the dorsal fin, and did the pectoral fins the same way. The tail is also made up of two small teardrops. Finally, for the beak of the dolphin, just a simple line should suffice, making sure it is thicker toward the head and thinner toward the tip. You can choose to outline and highlight/shade the design if you want, it's your choice, just don't forget the blowhole, we can't have that dolphin suffocating now, can we?

It's always a good idea to add water around your dolphins like they're swimming or jumping. This actually serves two functions, 1) It's more realistic and adds interest to the painting, and 2) it's that added bit of flair that can help hide or distract people from any accidental flaws or mistakes. Plus, if you just don't feel like messing around with making the tail, you can always just put water there instead like in my second design down there ↓↓↓. I actually messed up on the orca's tail in that one and used to water to cover it up. Laughing

Hope this helps!

Here are a couple other things I've done with dolphins just to give you ideas:

(First attempt at this design, notice how I put the dorsal fins a bit too far forward on both the dolphin and the orca? I find that if you think you're too far back on the body, that's probably where you should put the fin, lol.)

It is 3,60 in euro's for a little pot (i think 16 gram). I have a few metallic colours now of Superstar. They are allbeautiful. The bigger pots cotsts some more. You can send Saskia a mail for information about shipping costs? I don't know if she is up to that. I take a look at the site now. maybe, something is said about shipping in Dutch.

Metina, is it alright to mention this? If not please remove the message.

VERZENDKOSTEN BUITENLAND:
It says:
Meaning:
Also foreign customers can order in the Schminkwebshop. Shippingcosts will be 9,50 euro. Paying in front by bank. Packages can be sent ensured, but this is expensive to Belgium!
Over 250 euro no shipping costs.

The metallic colours (silver) are also available in 45 gram, costs 5,75 euro.
I don't know the dollar-euro rate. I think 1 euro is about 1,40 dollar. Not sure.

No, I think my translation sucks ha ha.
It says when you order for 250 euro or more, there are no shippingcosts. When you order less, than shipping is 9 euro, without insurance.

Could we get together a big order? It seems like we could find a way (or maybe Metina could find a way to get them to sell to her in bulk)?

I've been struggling with dolphins for ages and they are my current practice critter. Here is one from last night. I think I'll have to go to my brothers house for a youtube fix (my puter is waaaaay to slow for youtube!!) I love Lisa's vids so maybe I'll watch that one first. Haven't seen her round here lately No

now if I could just draw 100 or so dolphins before each time I'm asked to draw one I might get one like that onto a kids face!
