Working in State Parks

Post by Trish on Tue Mar 15, 2011 10:08 am

Hello Everyone!!

Another newbie question: I am thinking to do face painting in one of the State Parks in our area, so that I get some practice, some pictures for my album and simply to get experience.I recently had a brief conversation with the Park Officer, he informed that I will need a permit to do it. And further he will get back to me with more information.

Also, I will have quite basic setup (face paints from Wolfe, some metallics, some one stroke from Tag that I am practicing, rainbow cakes, brushes, sponges, 2-3 glitters, stick on jewels, wipes, mirror etc). All this on a folding table with tablecloth and chair (dont know if I will get a director chair by then). Dont have any banners yet.
Above all, this will be my first time painting to people other than friends and family.

My question is, should I offer my services for free and work for tips or should I charge per face, if yes than how much?. I am in the DC/VA metro area. Really need some advice on how should I talk to them.

Well when i do events for free i always leave a tip jar and put on it tip accepted and people usually always leave tips. You dont have to charge or anything if you are doing it to gain experience and so on, just put up a sign "free facepainting" and a tip jar in front and you will be good to go.
Good Luck! Hope this helps.

Make sure to follow up with him(I'll get back with you is usually a brush off). It's going to be dependent on the park. In many there's no soliciting allowed & steep fines if you get caught. Now, if you're just looking to practice, you can call homeschool groups, MOPS groups, Girl Scouts & offer your services for free on a building your portfolio basis. Have photo release forms so you can use the pics for your website, etc. Let them know this is temporary & you will be charging in the future.
