I'm getting a LOT of flack!

Post by photomomma6 on Tue Mar 22, 2011 1:17 pm

Wow, I put up some pics of belly paintings on my Facebook page because my friend wanted to see some. WOW_-did I get a lot of flack about it! Everyone was saying "Why would anyone want their belly painted?" and couldn't believe that ppl actually show that off...that some things were better not seen....Does anyone else have this problem? I think it's amazing, and if I'd known about it when I was pregnant I would want one! I just can't believe all these party pooper friends of mine! Question

I only got great feedback.... like "What a great idea!" "I wish I had done that!"
That's weird.

I have gotten several responses like, "Why would someone want that" or "What would you do with photos like this?". They weren't criticisms I think, just genuine curiosity. I tell them it makes a great keepsake for the baby book. Honestly, I'm one of those who wouldn't be caught dead showing my stomach in any shape or form, but I sure love painting on those less shy!

Now, one of my clown friends suggested I paint beer bellies!!! What hoot! One girl said, "You should paint the newborn baby like the movie Avatar and send out birth announcements with pictures of it.." They're really giving me some great ideas....LOL

When I was pregnant, Linda (Psalmbook) painted my belly at a festival to try to draw in some expectant moms to our tent. Many people loved it and admired it, but I had one lady who took the time to walk all the way across the busy isle starring at me the entire time, just to mumble "that it absolutely disgusting" at me. Let's face it, some of the old school people think that the pregnant belly should be hid. It's their own thing. I don't bother them and I appreciate it when they don't bother me.

In my henna stall my main banner with all the info on it has a pic of a belly on it. I find it is very eye-catching and often draws comments as it is something different. In the 3yrs I've been using that banner I've had maybe 2 or 3 "gross" comments but that's their issue most people are just fascinated by it...

That's how my mom reacted... but that's how she responded to most of my body painting adventures. Some people just don't get it. Look on the bright side... they aren't flagging your pics as obscene so they disappear from FB!

I never knew about Belly painting until I joined this forum (maybe I was living in a sheltered world LOL) but I do not have one photo from when I was pregnant 3 years ago, I wasn't overly big but didn't want the standard bra and undies with the big white belly sticking out photos (I was having enough issues with my bodies changes at the time) but looking back having my belly painted would have been perfect. It would have changed the way I viewed my body, gave me some memorable photos and given me a pamper session at the same time. I understan that this isn't for everyone but I'm disappointed now that I didn't even get the bra and undies shot. I missed out on recording the biggest event of my life because I didn't like the way I looked. Congratulations to all FPers out there who are helping mums (and dads) to be to make beuatiful memories!! If I have another baby I know what I'll be doing this time!!

Some people just don't get it. But, if someone post a negative comment about your work on Facebook, you can delete it. When I 1st started posting pic on FB I had someone say my paints weren't safe(it was all cosmetic grade, but they were into the holistic everything) & how children should never be painting, blah, blah, blah. It was a huge paragraph. I deleted it & unfriended them. I've also had a few vulgar things posted on my page & had to delete them. Sometimes people say strange things about painted faces.

I had good responses on Facebook but on a more personal note, most of my friends and family thought I had flipped my lid when I said I was going to do it. My mother-in-law, (very sweet gal), said well, whatever floats thier boat! Even though she still had a look of utter confusion about the idea of why someone would have that done.

I'm sure that I will continue to get somewhat mixed reviews, on belly painting but it is so awesome and wonderful to do, I won't ever be detoured from it. Keep on Keepin on Photomama! Smile

It is a strange thing in America. Don't want to insult anybody but on one side there is a huge adult industry going on, and on the other side people scream when they see a painted belly....
Here in the Netherlands ladies and their husbands love it. Think it's sweet and everybody is showing off their belly!
There has actually been a Beer-belly-competition last summer!
I've started bellying just last year so hadn't had much experience, but I like to get more experienced.

Yeah, I know, right??? Kitty, I totally am there with you on that!! I think it's ridiculous! Actually, the mom of the girl that wanted to see pictures asked all about it, and she seems interested! I guess we'll see! Thanks for all the support!

I've had all positive responses so far, even in the very conservative circle of the shower I just did, which was all church ladies, and the one I painted was a pastor's wife! A few people had questions, but it was more a curiosity thing than an "ew, why would anybody want that?" thing, and the mom mentioned that she had talked it over with her husband because she wondered if it would be appropriate (modesty is really pushed in this realm).

Of course it was in a private home surrounded by nothing but other women. I think this particular mom would not have been comfortable doing this or exposing the belly in public - however, it was very interesting to see that, although she was shy about exposing her tummy before it was painted, she totally kept it out on display the entire rest of the shower once it was done! People almost feel "clothed" by the paint - they are so wowed by the fact that it covers up stretch marks, navels, etc. She was also fine with my posting her photo to my website, although did ask that I use the ones that didn't show her face.

But I'm sure there are repressed folks out there who still find pregnant bellies repulsive. Heck, at this point in pregnancy I am a little repulsed by my own! Razz It is obscenely huge! There is also, I find, a certain level of intimacy that is perceived when you are painting one, which might make some folks uncomfortable.

I get a lot of "Oh, what a great idea!" and "I should have gotten my belly painted when I was pregnant!", but last year I gave a friend of mine a certificate for a belly painting for her baby shower, and there were a lot of the older generation who thought it was a combo of bizarre, disgusting, and somewhat embarrassing - but they were also against wearing anything remotely form-fitting while pregnant. That's fine; it's just their opinion. For every person who says how gross or weird it is, we've got dozens who think it's a great idea!

I think pregnant women are adorable!! And I think the belly paintings are sooo cute, eventhough I had never heard of it before getting on here. It's weird that people think its so strange.

I've also had people react weird to the idea of face painting, so some people just don't get it.
