A dither of dragons

Post by LoneWolf on Thu Mar 31, 2011 6:10 pm

I have been brainstorming dragon designs today. Around half are avoiding the eye and mouth area.
There is something new, something old, something blue and something borrowed..
Inspiration is Nick and Brian Wolfe, Marcela Murad, Des Shupe and Mark Reid among others.

"A dither of dragons" is from the page: http://user.tninet.se/~wcw454p/drakframe.html
There is a lot of nice dragon painting and drawings. Remember to read the text below.

Hope to see a lot of you at Fabaic where I have a pre-class about designing - good if you would like to tweak the designs you use now, or make some brand new one.
There is also a workshop about how to use big brushes - like dragons, dolphins and roses. And a demonstration with boy designs - tigers, maybe more dragons and other scary stuff.
(Request are welcome)

The designs here are painted with mostly split- and rainbow cakes, with #8 round, flat brushes and liners. (plus black and white).

Hope you like them =)

I really like and appreciate the ones that are going around the eyes and mouth instead of using them. That gives me much to think about, especially since I've been thinking about boy designs lately!

Thank you so much for sharing!

Re: A dither of dragons

Post by LoneWolf on Fri Apr 01, 2011 3:26 am

I am so happy you like them. Normally I both hate and love when someone ask for a dragon, since I love painting them, but hate that if you want to include arms, legs, wings, long neck, scales and all, there is not enough room and there is an eternity spend on lining. And I don't really like designs so much, where there is eyes in the middle of it, that interfere with the design - like an eye in the middle of a wing.
So my goal was to paint dragons that did not take forever, but still had details, and that avoided the eyes and mouth - so it could also be used for smaller kids.
After that I tried with some whole face ones, but I am still not super happy about those. I think in general I spend more time on those faces, but they don't have the same impact as smaller ones. Must work on that!

The brainstorming did take a few hours, but spread out, since it is a problem I have been thinking about for some time. When I thought of a placement or design element that could work, I drew it in my sketchbook. At the day, I also used google image search to look for dragon, dragon heads, Chinese dragons and dragon tattoos.

With the exception of the blue snake like dragon. I had a kid in Ninja outfit for carnival that wanted a design and I suggested a Chinese dragon. Started with an vague idea about Mark Reids tattoo dragon, but painted it with splitcake instead. I wasn't quite happy, but the boy, and a lot of other boys that day, really liked it, so I had many chances trying different techniques. Most of them was breathing fire and had a glitter gel dot in the eyes and a bit of glitter down the side, for extra effect.

They was all painted on the same day. I have a good technique for removing, so it wasn't really hard on the skin - even with DfX ;-) But it was a bit boring running back and forth to the bathroom *lol*
