Wolfe/DFX cracking??

Post by Metina on Sun Apr 12, 2009 11:29 am

Hiya,

I did a volunteer job at my daughters school for Easter and did lots of white bunnys. I was using Wolfe and I noticed that it was cracking on their faces almost as soon as it dried.

Normally I don't see kids much after I paint them, so I never noticed this before. But since I hung around for the whole party, I was VERY distressed to see this. I have been slowly changing my colors over to Wolfe/DFX for vibrancy, but am now wondering if the other non-water based paints such as Snaz, Paradise ect...or better for bases. I was also wondering if I could just add a bit of glycerin to the Wolfe/DFX.

Any thoughts on this would be helpful. My kids are on Spring Break this week and I want to do A LOT of practicing and photos to do a new post card and update my website.

Wolfe is NOT a base coat, particularly the white. I've tried it on myself and it was horrid... looked and felt awful after a few hours.

I use Kryolan or Snaz for white bases. Wolfe white for teeth and other details on top.

TBH I don't use WB or DFX for bases at all - it is all detail work or accents on the edges, etc. I'll sponge the WB on the edge of a butterfly wing for pop, or use for sections of a design, but not as the base coats.

Don't think adding anything to the WB would help and I'm not sure the glycerine would actually do much - the wax content is so high in the WB that it may not have much effect on it.

I use it at base in the face as well, with no problems. Maybe because of the weather here? But I made the mistake of doing a bodypainting with it. It cracked all over! It was for a statue, so it worked for that, but it was not on purpose. I'm trying to find some other colours to use, but the Kryolan and Mehron has a too strong sent (I have smell- and perfume sensitivity, meaning I get migraine from strong odours) and the Snazaroo and many other often contain parabenes, that they don't recommend. On almost every job I have concerned mothers that want to make sure that it is not in the products.

That's a great Idea, and it has been suggested and used before. A drop or two of glycerin added to your squirt bottle or your brush water works wonderful to give Wolfe and DFX that creamyness that you are looking for. Experiment until you get what you want. It does slow drying time, so keep that in mind.

Also if using Wolfe and Diamond as a base, you want to keep it light and thin to avoid cracking.

I'll have to experiment a bit. I don't normally do many white bases anyway, but with the rabbits, it was a given. I just have a bat man that I do ALL the time and just switched from the Snaz pastel blue to the DFX for better coverage. I will make sure to do one this week and see how it works.

Show us your version.

This is what I do. It is hard see, but I use the pastel blue on the entire bottom of the face.

I too can't use anything scented! Paradise causes me to have an asthma attack (and it is unpleasant on top of that!)

FWW or Fardel if you can get ahold of some are wonderful bases - they are creams and stay soft and plaible. Honestly, I forget I'm wearing FWW all the time!

I have tried with cream based, but I can not make them work for me, maybe because I tried to use them for line work as well. Prefers products I can use for everything *lol*

There is a picture of a Batman in the middle I used the metal blue from DFX to. It is a bit smudged though, that "boy" did not sit still!

Is this the type of FWW you use?

I couldn't tell if it was a powder or cream. This looks like a bag of powder.

FWW is a water based cream make-up... that plastic bag is a refill of the cream that you squeeze out into your jar.

Here's a review I did of it for a magazine

Another thing to add to my list of things I want to try. The special/shimmer colors sound nice.

No, Fardel and FWW are NOT the same product or company.

As a matter of fact the owner/founder of FWW used to work for Fardel, left and started his own company.

They are similar in that they are both water based creams and liquids, BUT, they are also different - Fardel which I love for body painting is denser and works differently in that you can slather it on and spread it over a wide area, FWW you have to apply in patches and blend together - I tried to apply and blend it like I do Fardel and it was not pretty!!

They are both excellent cream face paints.

I do prefer the Fardel for liquids by far though. Really great colours and smooth.

I have done many many paintings face and full body art with all Wolfe and never have cracking. For full body painting in the type of photo shoots I do Wolfe is great. Perhaps it was painted or sponged it on too thick. All the brands are so different in how you apply them and it takes very little Wolfe to get coverage. Wolfe applies fine over Paradise and Fantasy World Wide but at times it's so-so over glycerin filled Kryolan. Kurt and April are giving classes now on just blending the Wolfe - worth the time if you like using Wolfe. You can make it work great - it has a slight learning curve - most the products do.

Not sure who Kurt and April are, but post the class dates if you know of them in the training section. Thanks!

Hmm, I ONLY use wolfe for body paints and have never had it crack... but I do tend to use washes, almost, way wetter than you would sponge a face. I don't like it for face bases, same as Shannon said, and its too hard to get non-wolfe colours to stay true on top of anyway. I stick to griams etc for faces, mainly.

I have seen it crack on others people's stuff at events and wonder if iot was maybe too thick?
