Someone's got Pink Eye!

Post by Metina on Tue Apr 05, 2011 8:23 am

Hiya,

I just got an email this morning that one of the children I painted over the weekend has pink eye. They weren't saying they caught it from me-she is my daughters girl scout leader and had to cancel the meeting due to it. The child was just at a birthday party I was hired for.

I have already cleaned my kit, but feel I need to take extra measures. Any thoughts?

It may not be a concern if it didn't appear till today though - if it wasn't pink or tearing it might not have been in the contagious state.

Damage control kinda depends on your working style (brush/sponge to paint, then child, then paint again vs brush/sponge to paint to child once) and if you did anything near her eyes/tears and if so do you know which brushes/paints/sponges you did use? And how extreme do you want to be?

They say to clean hard objects (telephones/toys etc) with antibacterial wipes, but to use cotton to clean the eye with a single swipe and dispose of, and to discard contact lenses and their carrying case as the disinfection solution or hydrogen peroxide can't fully get rid of the bacteria or virus. http://www.eyedoctorguide.com/pink_eye/pink_eye_contagious.html

I've only run into pinkeye once that I know of (and it was already developed, and for a makeup photo shoot that had to continue) - everything I used on the person was sorted by contact, and anything near the eye was one trip from product to eye (not back) and discard immediately. I was too new to know I should have just said "no way".

Been there, got the t-shirt...

Wipe everything down with alcohol. Wash all brushes with soap and then saturate in 70% isopropyl alcohol. Wash the sponges in the washing machine on hot and then dry completely - dryer works.

Metina,
"Pink eye" can be caused by many things and self diagnosed as the wrong thing 80% of the time. I use quotes b/c
1: it could have been caused by your brushes, but if thats the case, more kids would have gotten it.
2: by feces (eww), but S#it happens lol. thats why you should ALWAYS wash your hands after bathroom use.
3: Severe sinus conjestion. I woke up to that a couple of years ago and was afraid to work (i was a nanny at the time) but the doc said it was due to my sinus iritating my eye.
4: last month my eye got all pink and slightly mucusy, but i know it was b/c i was messing with money and i stupidly rubbed my eye. I had some drops, and it went away in 2 days.
5: she rubbed her eyes and some paint may have gotten in and irritated her eye.

In conclusion, Your safe, dont worry!

Metina,

I always wash my sponges on hot in the washing machine and soak my supplies in 70% alcohol....you really can't do much better than that...

I wouldn't worry about alerting the other parents at the birthday party. The kids would be well into symptoms by now anyway if there was an issue.
