I feel like I found the biggest fp secret out there...

Post by Clayton on Sun Apr 17, 2011 5:16 pm

And actually don't know what to think right now... So, somebody somewhere was talking about this Tattoo Sourcebook, and then my friend Mirae was talking about it... So, I went online and it was like $50 I think, so I passed. Well, I was at the bookstore the other day and I saw it on clearance for $20, so I picked it up.

Before I continue, I have to say that I am not criticizing anyone's painting ability or creativity... But when I opened the book I was completely shocked. The first page I opened to was one with those amazing winged skulls Mark Reid does. Then... I found an almost carbon copy of Pashur's rose. As I flipped through the book I found more and more designs that the... top tier painters in our industry had done.

Don't get me wrong... I mean... You could have just as easily replaced the work in the book with the painters' work and you wouldn't blink. I really couldn't stop laughing. I always feel like I lack creativity and hate when I copy, or at least attempt to copy other people's work. So you can imagine how I felt when I saw that even the best of us do the same thing.

Again, I'm not trying to knock or criticize any of their work... It's always phenomenal. I really just wanted to let those of you who feel/felt "less than" for trying to copy others work instead of coming up with your own designs that just about everyone does it... no matter how talented a painter they are.

Oh... The book... Yes, It's definitely a must have. I went back and purchased one for my mother too. There are SO many great designs in it. I've actually seen quite a few designs around from it lately (now that I know what comes from it)

Very cool. IN the photography industry we always say, "Every idea belonged to someone else first." I guess that's true in FP as well. Great buy--what's the name of it? I'll have to look it up!

Lots of people copy designs, the trick is making them look like you own them. I don't know if that's a FP secret as much as a LIFE secret. Very Happy

Fake it 'til you make it.

Tattoo Johnny is another book of the same - tattoo flash art. And I like it a bit better than The Tattoo Sourcebook (I have both)...

And people have ALWAYS copied art from other media... winning designs too. I recognize bookcover art regularly in the Snaz contests.

Google images is your BEST friend as a face/body painter!

It is all about adapting it to the face/body...

Lol!!! Yes, I saw this book out at 3 different stations in the body painting competition at FABAIC last year. One of the placing artists from last year is who introduced me to the book. It is very cool and has a ton of designs that are easily transferred to face and body art. To me, it's the same as everyone googling images to get inspiration. Everyone has to be inspired by something.

This is actually something I've really struggled with in my personal growth. I'd love to be more inspired by things I see everyday, but for the most part, it's other forms of art that inspire me.

I must admit, I was a bit disappointed the first time I realized that even the "Bigs" get inspiration the same way I do. I thought there would be some magical "inspirational process" that I would have to learn. But now, it just makes them seem a bit more "human" to me. It's now just a comforting thought that I have something in common with such talented people.

$50 i just too much for me.
I've found many googled images use in body & face art. I get a lot of my inspiration from there as well.

I saw Mark painting at living canvas with a stack of tattoo books at his side. We need to follow their lead! Get copying, and then add your own style when we want to learn new ways to paint!

I got mine for $20 at Borders (hhmmm, maybe another big book store), in the special sales section.

I have several designs pulled from that book on my facebook page. I took it with me to an event and the teens were all over it!
Found mine at B&N for about $20, great resource.

I sometimes chuckle when people get upset over being "copied". We all pull from different resources and inspirations.

Both of mine were gifts... Gotta love my FP friends!! I love you

I buy art books in sale bins... I love looking at Dali and the Impressionists and getting ideas.

All art is derivative... even the old masters - the Renaissance painters copied the Greeks and Romans and Biblical sources for their inspiration... not that we are all that, but... my point is that this is how art spreads, is shared, inspires and adapts...

There is no secret nor any "shame" in doing it.

WOW thankyou for this post... it has brought freedsom to my soul!!! yay and yay again!
I actually sat down and did my own designs the other day for the first time.I think the longer you do this the easier it just flows...yet when I look at some of them it was a regugitated mash of diffrent designs put together.
Loving the process!
