I feel like I found the biggest fp secret out there...

Post by Clayton on Sun Apr 17, 2011 5:16 pm

And actually don't know what to think right now... So, somebody somewhere was talking about this Tattoo Sourcebook, and then my friend Mirae was talking about it... So, I went online and it was like $50 I think, so I passed. Well, I was at the bookstore the other day and I saw it on clearance for $20, so I picked it up.

Before I continue, I have to say that I am not criticizing anyone's painting ability or creativity... But when I opened the book I was completely shocked. The first page I opened to was one with those amazing winged skulls Mark Reid does. Then... I found an almost carbon copy of Pashur's rose. As I flipped through the book I found more and more designs that the... top tier painters in our industry had done.

Don't get me wrong... I mean... You could have just as easily replaced the work in the book with the painters' work and you wouldn't blink. I really couldn't stop laughing. I always feel like I lack creativity and hate when I copy, or at least attempt to copy other people's work. So you can imagine how I felt when I saw that even the best of us do the same thing.

Again, I'm not trying to knock or criticize any of their work... It's always phenomenal. I really just wanted to let those of you who feel/felt "less than" for trying to copy others work instead of coming up with your own designs that just about everyone does it... no matter how talented a painter they are.

Oh... The book... Yes, It's definitely a must have. I went back and purchased one for my mother too. There are SO many great designs in it. I've actually seen quite a few designs around from it lately (now that I know what comes from it)

Very cool. IN the photography industry we always say, "Every idea belonged to someone else first." I guess that's true in FP as well. Great buy--what's the name of it? I'll have to look it up!

Lots of people copy designs, the trick is making them look like you own them. I don't know if that's a FP secret as much as a LIFE secret. Very Happy

Fake it 'til you make it.

Tattoo Johnny is another book of the same - tattoo flash art. And I like it a bit better than The Tattoo Sourcebook (I have both)...

And people have ALWAYS copied art from other media... winning designs too. I recognize bookcover art regularly in the Snaz contests.

Google images is your BEST friend as a face/body painter!

It is all about adapting it to the face/body...

Lol!!! Yes, I saw this book out at 3 different stations in the body painting competition at FABAIC last year. One of the placing artists from last year is who introduced me to the book. It is very cool and has a ton of designs that are easily transferred to face and body art. To me, it's the same as everyone googling images to get inspiration. Everyone has to be inspired by something.

This is actually something I've really struggled with in my personal growth. I'd love to be more inspired by things I see everyday, but for the most part, it's other forms of art that inspire me.

I must admit, I was a bit disappointed the first time I realized that even the "Bigs" get inspiration the same way I do. I thought there would be some magical "inspirational process" that I would have to learn. But now, it just makes them seem a bit more "human" to me. It's now just a comforting thought that I have something in common with such talented people.

I saw Mark painting at living canvas with a stack of tattoo books at his side. We need to follow their lead! Get copying, and then add your own style when we want to learn new ways to paint!

I have several designs pulled from that book on my facebook page. I took it with me to an event and the teens were all over it!
Found mine at B&N for about $20, great resource.

I sometimes chuckle when people get upset over being "copied". We all pull from different resources and inspirations.

Both of mine were gifts... Gotta love my FP friends!! I love you

I buy art books in sale bins... I love looking at Dali and the Impressionists and getting ideas.

All art is derivative... even the old masters - the Renaissance painters copied the Greeks and Romans and Biblical sources for their inspiration... not that we are all that, but... my point is that this is how art spreads, is shared, inspires and adapts...

There is no secret nor any "shame" in doing it.

that book has been making the rounds of the big leagues for a while now. I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as you can execute it, then I say go for it.

Coloring books are my secret addiction for reference material Smile

Yay for art regurgitation! LOL! I absolutely love picking my favorite elements from several different designs, chomping them up and puking out a unique creation. Laughing

Well news to you! Good you found a source for ideas. And on sale!!
But no secret face painters have openly been talking about this book for coming on 2 years. Mark openly shares in his classes he uses the book for ideas. And Dawn Dewitt recommends them in her hand painted tattoo classes for alcohol activated makeup. And both have Tattoo Johnny - I know!

Look for creative sources everywhere - the classic tattoo look is "in" right now but who knows in a few years............. for year no one wanted stars now we can't airbrush or paint enough in our business.

Once years back Pashur did a wonderful body painting which was inspired by vase he saw in the hotel gift shop we were at, so never rule things out.

Many top painters/makeup,visual/graphic artists in general keep idea books. It is something one is trained to do and it may come naturally to creative minds. Say you want to paint tigers - so maybe Shannon shares a tiger and you love it so you clip it for your book - maybe Angie shares one and you think the muzzle rocks so you clip it, and maybe you have photos of real tigers, a drawing of a tiger from a greeting card, a snippet of an image of a blanket you saw that spoke tiger to you - all go in the book.

There are no new plots - (Shakesphere) and then again all can be recreated into new - even original artworks. (and no not all face painting is art!)

I've kept "idea books" for years (and I mean YEARS!)... for make-up we call it a "photo morgue" - clippings from fashion mags, etc. of looks we want to keep track of, trends, reference for bridal looks, etc.

I also have a section in my "photo morgue" of actual autopsy photos etc. I am a special effects artist too so those are REALLY handy! The blood has all been cleaned up so I can see the layering of tissue, the pattern of shotgun pellets in the back of the head, etc. Got them from a homicide detective - they were the photos they used to train new recruits.

I've got huge binders that I keep. One is where I file my templates of ideas I've had for future use... I tend to sit and sketch ideas while watching CSI (and no, not all are of dead people!) It is handy as when I need something for a specific theme I can go look through it and oh, look, I already have a design that will work that I've never painted before!

Another binder is stuff that I liked and think I may want to use - not necessarily other people's work (there are some in there) but images that have some element that appeals to me that I think may be useful, ads that have something interesting visually (like those AT&T hand paintings!), etc.

Some of it is just for inspiration because it is so cool.

I agree, I've watched Wiser and Mark use references from both book as a springboard for their designs while painting. There are several instructors who've been very open about where to get inspiration from. I don't see much of a secret being revealed either. I have both and have painted many of the designs for poops and giggles. I have to admit that it's helped me tremendously, from a confidence stand point and a techniques standpoint.

I love both the books, then again I love tattoos too. Although I have set my personal limit of how many I have at 5....plus I promised my mom I would get no more than that...lololol @ grown and still doing what my mother says...lolol

Getting my last two this summer...and ironically they are a collab of designs from the tattoo books.

I have been getting better and better with working with the Tattoo paints, once you get right consistency with the alcohol to paint they go on beautifully and you can create some really "realistic" tattoo looks. I have replicated several designs from each book. Now just working the speed of it so I can begin offering them. Looking at, at least offering 10 designs to start.
