advise on a gig

Post by shandi on Wed Apr 20, 2011 1:58 pm

I approached a big comic book convention about face/body painting they called me back and said if I was willing to face paint kids under 10 for free that they would allow me to paint for free and charge adults what ever I want. That means I can be there for the night time activities and the adult themed parties....I'm kinda torn between heck yes! and worried about loosing money from using up my supplies...
I am also thinking this is to good to pass up! what do you all think?
If I agree I'm going to need more bling and more tatts thats for sure!

What is the demographics of the convention? Is there a significant number of children under 10 expected or is it just a way to amuse the occasional child who might come with an adult (target market)? You don't want to have a line up of 50 kids if that means that no adult would stand in line....

I would be afraid that all I would paint would be the kids, and wind up essentially taking a loss. I think the adults are most likely going to be holding their $$ in favor of buying up that collectible item, rather than spending the money on "FUN" stuff.

Tough call... it's bound to be packed with folks who would love to be made into their World of Warcraft character. Cha-Ching. They usually have costume contests, so it'd be really cool to be able to book private sessions. (GenCon is in Indy and I love it when I see a dozen storm troopers or folks in full paint just walking around downtown!)

I'd say if you went for it, have a specific menu of the "freebies" that only take a minute to paint. Stencils or something.

It depends: Do you have other potential bookings that are sure $$ in your pocket or do you have nothing going that day? If the latter, I would do it! You get to work on your superhero/villain/comic book faces. For kids offer the bare minimum basices (bat girl, batman, spiderman, wonder woman and iron man). For adults offer more and let the kids know that these designs are more complex and for adults only. Make sure you have a tip jar! BTW the wolfe bros have an awesome orc face you may want to look into just in case!

we talked today the and he agreed to a small choice board for the free ones and I saw that Faketoo's has quite a few superhero/comic book tatts, so I'm going to invest in those and if nothing else I'm pretty sure the tatts will go over since they last well and it's a three day event. He told me to be sure and put out a tip jar and he's giving me two free passes for the event. No matter what I think it's a good chance for making some money, and no other prospect for that weekend.

How much would it cost you to buy a space there?

Make sure to have tons of advertisement. Also, get to know your obscure heroes/villains & off brands of comics. Some comic fans will be very picky & want your work to be very exact.
