Photo display quandry...

Post by JinkxyKitten on Thu Apr 21, 2011 7:20 pm

Originally I was questioning photo size, now I've moved onto a new problem. After worrying about photo size, I decided to go ahead and get three 18x24 boards...

They are black dry erase boards and look very snazzy with all my images. What I would really like to do is somehow hinge the three boards into a trifold display. So far I have failed pretty miserably...The boards have a masonite-like backing with a raised frame that is about 1/2 an inch thick. There are corners already in place for hanging but they have ridges in them. I tried velcro and fabric (canvas) hinges but they weren't quite strong enough and the velcro didn't want to stay on the fabric. Any thoughts on how to connect the three boards so they will be self standing? Right now I just have all three on mini table easles. I can get some pics if they would be helpful.

Thanks,
Rachel

How far away are they going to be looking at this? If it is something that has to draw their attention from several feet away (walking by), bigger photos are needed, but if they are going to be coming up to it and closely inspecting (or you are going to be handing it to them for instance), that kind of size can work. Most of mine are actually smaller than that.....

Well I wont be using it to compete for attention. I'm going to be pretty well advertised at the events I have coming up and there aren't any other face painters. I'm just afraid they won't be able to see everything, but I don't know.

my displays are a small banner from vista print (I don't recall the exact dimensions) but I have two of them with 24 square photos on each... I THINK they are about 4 in. square? It may be more about zooming and cropping carefully. For cheek art, you don't need to see your model's whole face, crop it tight and you should be able to see it well enough. Squares saved me a lot of space and I didn't have to worry about whether or not I took the photo in portrait or landscape.

All my display photos are set-up in two formats nine photos or sixteen photos to an 8"X11" sheet. So they aren't very big - they don't need to be.

Oh, and I also want them detachable if possible so I can have the option of just using one board and smaller pics. Not asking much lol...I don't know if duct tape would leave a sticky mess behind after I removed it. I did just pick some up to try to help with line control though...

How about attaching fabric to the whole back side and sewing on velcro (the soft side) Then you could attach them with strips of velcro (rough side) in several places (maybe top, middle and bottom)?

Thanks for the compliment on my avatar! It's a friend's daughter I did for Easter. It was great advertising at the Easter egg hunt, especially because my friend is better at selling me than I am. LOL! ...and the face painting there consisted of tiny little triangular ears on the forehead and whiskers (probably done in acrylics)

Hrm, I think the frame is aluminuium but I'll look into those screws...I might try the fabric thing again, the only annoying thing is that I have to buy sticky velcro to use on the board and then get the sewing velcro for the fabric so it costs twice as much.

I was thinking sew the velcro strips on fabric, and glue the fabric on the whole back (or you could use felt.) ...the sewing velcro comes with both sides and you could use just that - long thick strips of it to connect to the velcro parts that are sewn to the fabric. I don't know what you mean by having to buy both kinds.

I don't think I can describe it with just words so I drew a little diagram for ya:

velcro makes it easy for you, I'll just make the suggestion though that if you make them removable, that they are not removable to the customers during the events.... they'll bring them to you and you'll keep having to go back and put everything back where it belongs.

Ahhh I get it now, yay pictures! That seems like it would work much better What kind of glue do you think would be best to attach the fabric?...
The boards are magnetic so I got magnetic photos sleeves for the pictures. The entire back of the sleeves are magnectic, not just in a few places so they look very secure. They don't really look removable so hopefully that won't be a problem. I'm trying it out this weekend though so we'll see...I'll take a picture just because lol.

Here are all three and then a close-up. At the moment I have mostly word signs because I'm painting with someone else this weekend. I'm also planning on writing the times I'm painting in that empty space in the middle one and I'm going to make an additional "Face Painting" sign to attach to the top of the middle.

Glue? Hmmm... Any kind I suppose. I was thinking having the whole fabric glued would make it so much stronger of a bond then just the sticky Velcro. Um, maybe tacky glue or fabric glue? Some kind of craft glue you could spread over the whole piece I think.

Are you completely married to those panels? Sounds like a lot of effort.

For one of my displays I bought a folding three panel display at Staples - those foam core science project ones... then used spray adhesive to attach fabric to it (I hunted everywhere to find fabric velcro would stick too!! Not easy...and I got strange looks when I would whip out my strip of velcro and try sticking it to all the fabrics in a store!) Finally found fabric at (hiss boo) Walmart. I then trimmed it with coloured duct tape.

I really need to take a photo of the finished thing!

I finally got it to work! yay! And it was annoyingly simple too. I got some 2in. industrial strength sticky velcro and stuck one side directly to the back of the board and then used the other side as the hinge (thanks gina). Everything looks good so far, just need to decide if I should leave the sticky backing on the other piece of velcro or find some paper or something to line it with...

Shannon, I do really love these, they are shiny and sleek and make everything pop. I was originally going to do exactly what you did but I love the way the magnet frames work (they are super secure to the board and switch out really easily). I also like the neon colors I have to write with for changable info....I would still love to see a pick of your board though. Always looking for inspiration....

Now on to make that "face painting" title sign I've been putting off for days...
