Should a base always be done?? I noticed in a lot of vids I watch on youtube or people I've seen facepainting I never see them use a base. But when I use the Dfx red for spiderman for example without a base (I've used a white base for that one) then the red stains terribly!
So just curious as to when to use a base or is it just with certain designs? I've read some people mentioning always using a base is more hygienic cause you aren't putting face the rest of your paint directly on skin.
I think a base is just the color you use to cover the majority of the face, as in anything not used for details, dots, lines. etc. Like on a puppy that is mainly white, white would be the base, or spidy would be a red base, different from laying down like a white then trying to lay a color over it. Does that make sense? I tend to go for creamier and non staining brands for bases, snaz, or paradise.

I have had DFX, and it got more gooey on me than the Wolfe (before I tried the dippy pot). I have a lot of repeats, and although I was originally nervous about the stains from the red (and the black around the eyes), I have never had a complaint. Olive oil, straight baby shampoo on a wipe/washcloth or make-up remover are what I tell the parents.
Olive oil? How do you apply/use it?

Jody...I use a lot of Snaz too. I've had the same experience with the sparkle...or metallic ones. They just don't cover like the others. You can put down a flat color base and then go over it with the sparkle. That should help.

cotton balls, q tips, slathered directly & wiped with tissue...whatever---same as you would with make-up remover...

I use it all the time, because I stain all the time. doesnt matter how much lotion I use. I try to completely clean my face the best I can with baby shampoo and water. Any residue left behind I dab Olive oil (or baby oil) on a cotton ball and dab/wipe/apply to the face in circular motions until it lifts all the color.
I work at a bank as my day job so coming in with a stained face is no go.

Baby oil is mineral oil and depletes Vitamin K, olive oil regenerates & has lots of vitamin E. I have a friend in Nepal who used it for years, as she couldn't afford creams...turns out she looks beautiful from nourishing her skin all these years!

At my last gig I had hugeeee problems getting my blacks black and my whites white. It needs to look crisp and clean but for some reason it just wasn't working. It made my work look so sloppyyy and especially because allot of the girls wanted a white hello kitty mask...

I need help, what am I doing wrong? And what can I do to get those nice clean lines? I have both snaz black and white and tag black and white. My snaz black is all melted so it's really finicky to get a good consistancy so I use the Tag's, but I just can't get it right without having to go over and over it. It is always to thick or to watery.

I think first I'd look at technique before the brand of paint you're using. You never actually said if you sponge your base on or brush it. My recommendation is to sponge, and tap tap tap it on rather than swiping it on. Tapping takes longer, but looks better and more consistent. (I'm a WolfeFX guy but use snaz white all the time as a base.)
I can't speak to how you do it once the black gets all bubblegum on you. I hated Snaz for that, and I won't use Wolfe black for a base, so I got in the habit of simply avoiding using black at all except for lines and details.
Also bear in mind the environment can play a role. If the kids are sweaty or have sunscreen on, it can be harder to get a good smooth base. It can still be done but its tougher. (Frankly I have more problem getting a smooth base finish with Wolfe regular blue. No idea why.)
Is this something that just happened THIS time? If so I'd guess it may have been an environment thing.

I know exactly what you are talking about.. I also have the TAG Black, most all my paints are Tag but the black is really hard to work with. I also cant seem to get the consistency correct, gets all gloopy.. I can do nice lines in other colors.. so I just dont understand and blame it on being new to the game and that I must be doing something wrong.. I gotta get DFX white n black.. So your not alone and if you figure it out let me know!!
