My opinion about Tulip facepaint...grrrr!

Post by Gr8ful on Tue May 03, 2011 2:50 pm

Well, I had a 40% off coupon for Micheal's so I thought I would give the Tulip paint kits a try just out of curiosity. The colors are very nice, BUT...after repeated washing up to and including soap and water, then palmolive dish soap and water, and followed by a baby wipe the darker purple and the blue is still quite visible on my arm. When dd gets home from school I will ask her to get a picture and see how it comes out so I can post it. I would not feel comfortable using these paints on anyone but myself unless it was the teeniest of details and with full knowledge that these colors will not come off easily. What a waste of a 40% off coupon IMHO.

Fortunately I did it on my arm. My schoolbus kids would have given me a pretty hard time if this was on my face. ROFL I was trying to figure out how to do a rose (did not do well at all!) and then I thought I should maybe try those paints to check coverage, ease of use, washability etc. I am not amused considering how expensive they are. $29.99 for 8 teeny little pots in a kit plus tax here in SK.

Thought I would put in my 2cents. I posted this on the thread about them. I had pretty much the same experience but here it it:
I went to Michaels and tried it. I tried both a glitter tattoo kit and now 2 paint colors. I normally use pretty much all DFX and love it. I sometimes come home and fall asleep with my paint on and never have any staining ( excluding the back of my calf and only the black stains after i sleep with it) I tried the tulip red first and actually really liked the consistency and the coverage. I wiped it off after only a minuet and already had a bad stain. A few days later I tried the Blue and same thing. I like the coverage but if it stained me and my un-stainable skin I know it would be bad on some kids.

Glitter tattoos. The stencils are nice. They dont rip as easily as other I have seen and can be reused about 3 times before there adhesive started to wear. The first one I did with the basic kit and glitter and it actually lasted, on me as well as my daughter , for about 4 day. Still looked good and complete at that point. It started to wear at the 5th shower and didnt look "bad" till day 7. The next tat I did with the neon giltter and it seems to be more grainy that glitter. it only lasted 2 days looking good ( 1 shower) and by day 4 looked like a big mess. The neon glitter just seemed weird. Other wise I actually like the tattoos.

I liked the glitter tat kits too. I didn't get neon and both mine and my daughter's stayed nice for about 4 days. We are both alllergic to some adhesives (Elastoplast being a big one) so I was a bit worried about reactions but both of us did fine and we are on our second tats now. We love them. I also added MicaBella Cosmetic Glitter because I adore that product line and the glitter is amazing wet or dry.

I spoke with the Micheals staff and they experienced the same non-removal issues with the paints. They reported it lasting 3 days, staining and just not coming off. Micheal is not a makeup store - it's a craft supply store!

Yes, they (Micheal's) are a craft and hobby supply store but they happen to carry Snazaroo and Tulip Face paints. I liked the colors offered by Tulip but don't care for the product. It was worth a try IMHO.

Thank you for this thread. I was shopping at Micheal's for brushes and saw the huge display of face paints and giltter stencils. I was really really tempted but wondered what my fpf friends would say about the product. I am so glad I did not buy the paints!
I did buy some stencils and wondered how many uses I could get out of them. If I only get 3 then it does not seem a good item for a festival when you are super busy and have to have something you can count on. I just tried the stencils with face paint (snaz and rainbow cake by sillyfarm) and they worked pretty good. Yes, some sticky left but seems a shame to only get so few uses out of them...cant really offer it as a design for sale if it only does so few...
But I liked that I experimented with it as a stencil and not a glitter tatoo. I appreciate the expertize of face paint forum members!!!

Hi Aussiemarie. Michelle had posted another thread on this topic first which got me thinking about it. I posted mine after hers but I am glad it was helpful and hope you found hers too. I am learning so much and will be a better artist/entertainer because of the gracious encouragment and expertise found here @ FPF.

I actually got tempted and bought a 13$ set of "Festival" themed paints, which had the metallic/pearl White, pink, rose, blue, and dark fusia , dark blue, metallic green and something else (lavender I think).

The metallics (other than bright blue) Are pretty useless on my light skin. I don't know if they will be any good on dark skin, but on me - they were almost invisible. I did like the way pearl white shines though.

The fusia does stain (still on my arm, a bunch of washes later), but I found it to be nice and bright to go on top of other colors for accents. Oh, it also had a bronze metallic - not bad actually. I was able to paint it on quite nicely.

So, to try this out, I kind of enjoyed it. But definitely not something to stick with, it just does not seem to do the work well.

I know we have some haters, but I broke out my silver, white and black tulip today, and it works great. The silver sponged awesome and did great for line work. I will be snagging more coupons and buying a few. At 3.50 I am perfectly happy. If I find my camera cord, I will post a pic, unfortunely I forgot to put my memory card back in my camera today...boooo

Are you sponging the flat paints (matte) or the metallic ones? The metallic for me don't seem to show at all, well just barely, when I sponge.

Actually I am not sure, it was the silver in the large pot, not kit. I am assuming it must be metallic. I used a white snaz sponge, and just a car wash sponge, and it worked well with both. I posted a sample before in the http://www.facepaintforum.com/t4609p90-this-vs-that-comparing-brands-side-by-side-picture-heavy
I don't think the picture does justice to how pretty and non transparent it is.

I'm glad you posted that about the silver Eva. I remember your earlier comparison and could use some more silver for the market so I was thinking about your post just yesterday. Since Canada Post is striking right now my only choice is to try the Tulip siver or not have any.

Based on your opinion/assessment I am going to give the silver a chance. I loved the coverage and consistency of the other colors but the darker ones (from the kit) stain pretty bad so I won't use those on anyone but myself.

Yeah, I am really glad that someone took one for the team on the colors, I only bought ones that were reported not to stain, and I like them, except the neon yellow was really transparent and I gave it away.
One another note the tag lime green stained me for 2 days, and I am not easily stained, the only other color that has stained me is snaz turquoise.

I tried the Tulip glitters this weekend at a gig and was pretty unimpressed. The bright blue and pink just look like paint crumbles when applied, there's no reflective glitter once they're sitting on top of paint. They're very vibrant in the jar, and might make for okay glitter tattoos, but I'll stick to Metina's regular iridescent glitter for faces.

How is the coverage/workability on the white and black??

I've ordered some DFX but with the strike I'm afraid it's not going to make it here in time. Was at Michaels here in PG and they have the Tuplip paints here.

A note on staining the Paradise turquoise is pretty stainy too.

I like them both. They are better than snaz for line work. I like the black a lot, I think it's comparable to dfx, and the white is pretty good too, but It picks up a little more color than wolfe. I wouldn't buy them without a coupon for sure. It is a thin layer of paint in the pot. Side note, the pot is the same as the tag pot..

I try Tulip too, and had the same ugly experience!!, I bought the silver and teal colors, and try it first and the stain was in my arm by 3 days the silver washed easily, but the teal some days latter start to have a little dark blue liquid that came worst day by day, can you belive what may happen if some one just used for a full face desing?, because of that kind of products some people doesnt like face paint and give us bad reputation, good thing sweet Loretta spoke with the staff, I was tempted to do it but my hubby stoped me, I also do my own logo in my cases , chairs, etc, and was short of fabric paint for a banner, I needed the black glitter color, and this time just find it in tulip brand , so sticky, and actualy when you try to work it turn in a ligth grey color scratch , so I just promise to dont by that brand again , I have a pic for the teal paint so you can see wath happens.

I bought a small kits with 6 colors. Every single one stained my skin for days. The blue and green then worse. My skins stains easily but never for longer then a night. 3 days is a little crazy. I work at a bank and cant walk around with my arms with swirls everywhere. Very Happy

It was great for line work and was easy to make a good consistancy. Not creamy, more like a watercolor. I only use it if the person is fully aware it can last days, and I never use it on the face. I was sad I spent that much money on it Sad

Write to the company and tell them about your experience. I'd tell them you want a refund and would be happy to mail the product back to them. If you are nice, but firm they probably will send a refund and tell you to keep the paint. This approach works with almost any reputable company.

I just got the Tulip white the other day...and I guess it's fine (it's no Wolfe!), but have you guys noticed a smell to your Tulip paints? The first thing I noticed when I opened it is that it smells like a stinky sweaty dirty kid or a dog or something. I don't know any other way to explain it, but it really doesn't smell good at all.

Re: My opinion about Tulip facepaint...grrrr!

Post by Lynnie on Tue Aug 02, 2011 2:14 pm

I only bought the silver as two of my girls use silver as a base for everything.

Here's a thought though, what about buying the ones that stain and only using them on arm designs like for temporary tattoos? Wiser teaches to spray an arm with hairspray to make it stay. I prefer a finishing spray but it might be nice for "tattoo" designs. Maybe?

I tried the glitter. The glue works fine. Lasted on me about a week. The glitter sucks. There's very little shine to it. I can get a much longer use out of most of my other stencils so it isn't worth the cost balance unless I'm in a pinch.

I took the leap and decided to try the canned "airbrush" paint. It was bad. The stencils are fine enough but the paint went on splotchy and started to crack within minutes. The blue wasn't even opaque. I put it on my leg and 4 hours later, I crossed my legs and ended up with the superimposed image on my not-painted leg. As the day went on, the blue was gone before bed time. The black lasted until the next day, when I showered. It wasn't even remotely close to the 3-5 days advertised.

I spoke with Micheal's about it and our manager said they've had a lot of complaints at the store but that what they stock is determined by a home office, so to email corporate about it.
