LOL, i think i figured out sponges.

Post by DragonFly on Mon May 30, 2011 8:33 pm

So, you know how you can sometimes see someone do something a hundred times, and it never really clicks?
I was struggling to much with sponges that it became the most dreadful part of face painting for me. Well, I have recently figured out...I was using the wrong end!
With the circle sponges, I would cut them in half and use the flat end. And it stunk! It didn't really spread or absorb the paint, and I could not get ANY kind of shape done. Well, I turned it around, started using the rounded edge for paint dabbing, and voila - all of a sudden I am able to sponge much better.

I was laughing, like seriously. Have you ever had a brain fart that lasted a few months?

That's great. I use the flat side most of the time myself. Whatever works for you is the best!

LOL, now i feel even sillier. I thought that I was just using the wrong side, but I guess i haven't figured out how to use them yet at all.
Well,t he rounded seems to work much better for me. I also bought some softer sponges from Michaels (my first patch was from Silly farm), and oh boy, are they easier to use!

Funny... I think most use the flat side, but I prefer the rounded as well.

Now I want to try the rounded side, just to see what you're talking about. I've always used the flat side, except when I 1st started & was trying to paint w/ a whole round sponge Very Happy

I use both sides so there really is no wrong side. I lay down colors on flat and blend with the rounded. Or if I find I have a lil too much water in the sponge and the color is comin out splotchy...I use the dry rounded side to soak up the excess and blend

There is no "wrong" side... just what works. I do use the rounded side too, just use the flat side to start with.

If I am going to load a split cake onto my sponge I use the round side as I find it easier to apply as I can rock the sponge to apply it and I find that is easier for me.

At the Wolfe brothers class I just took, they use the rounded side, the top edge near the cut for applying and the middle area for blending. I hated sponging before as well, but I think I finally got the hang of it down.

However, I still use the flat side for some split cakes, depending on their shape.

What I figured out, and this might just work for me only, but I can apply the paint over the eyelid MUCH easier with the rounded side, rather than the flat one.
With the flat side, I end up dragging it across, making it quite uncomfortable for the paintee. But with rounded, not only I can load the paint much easier in my tiny deep pots (I scrunch it up and release once int he pot and dab-dab-dab), but I also just kind of cradle-rock over the eyelid. The rounded part falls nicer into the inner crease of the eye, and I barely have to apply any pressure to get the paint on the eyelid.
