Does Poof Glitter Actually Poof?

Post by Kristal on Sun May 24, 2009 6:28 pm

My dad's heading to California in July, so I'm thinking of doing a mass order from Silly Farm - and I'm looking at stocking up on the Mama Clown Glitter.

A) Have you used this? I know it's irridescent, but anyone with first-hand experience?

B) I've never tried a poof bottle - I dab it on, but poofing seems like it would be grand! (Plus, the word poof is great...haha). Do you just squeeze? I keep thinking that half the bottle will spill out...

C) If you've ordered this exact one; how big is the bottle? It seems like I could just buy the bottles at Michael's or someplace - unless it's special and I don't realise?

and

D) Colours you've tried? I'm obviously getting the white. (I'm planning on all of the 1lb bottles - glitter forever! Or at least a while, haha.) I'm so tempted to buy them all...but am I really going to need a pound of the Cranberry?

Thanks!

I bought one recently (my first poof bottle). I LOVED it. And yes, it does poof. Much easier to apply than with my finger. It's about 2 inches tall, not including the poof lid. 3 and 3/4 inches with the poof lid.

You dont want to buy craft glitter from Michaels, its made from metal and could cause scratching on the skin. You want cosmetic grade glitter only. The poof bottles are really nice, just dont squeeze to hard or you'll get to much glittler. I use the tap method, where I gently tap the bottle, this works alot better for small areas. Dont forget a brush to wipe off any extra. If your looking to "stock up" I would recommend getting a glittler kit from Silly Farm.

The poof bottles from Silly Farm with the glitter in it are the larger ones.

There are tons of colors, but make sure you buy only irridescent ones for face painting as these work better. Buy as many as you like, but I have figured out that having yellow, pink and white will get me through any job and I am sticking to these for sanity.

Wow 1lb of glitter. This is going to last you forever. Maybe find a friend and split it? But looks can be decieving. It wish Silly Farm would put more demensions and weights associated with what they are selling. It makes it impossible to compare pricing when you don't know how much is there. (with the smaller vial and the poof bottle) I think they have a good value and you will find that the poof bottle purchase would last you for a long time!

I had to email them to find out how much was in the poof bottle and sorry I don't remember.

Oh, I never use craft glitter! I was just talking about buying the bottles (sans glitter)!

And yes, I also only get the irridiscent ones. Good idea with emailing them! I was thinking of the 1lb-ers because A)who knows the next time someone's going to the States?! (Free shipping!) and B) I didn't know how big the smaller bottles were (I wish they put weights with them, too), and figured that generally, bulk is cheaper so...why not?

Thanks for the info! I'll have to try the poof-ers now...!

Question: can I refill the poof bottles when they run out of glitter?

I love love love my poof glitters! I get them from www.chitchattheclown.com in the larger size, which is about 3 inches tall. I have about six of the holographic/iridescent colors and they all fit into my kit easily. I agree that the pink, white and yellow are used most. I do also have the iridescent green, purple and neon orange which are awesome looking.

I'd suggest buying from Kim Hatch (website I listed) because her bottles come without holes in them, and you can make your own hole as large or small as you want it. It needs to be pretty small to actually "poof", and often other bottles have pre-made holes that are too large. If you buy Kim's, take a needle and make your own hole, slowly expanding it until it poofs just like you like it. Craft store bottles wouldn't work because the openings are WAY too big and glitter would just pour out.

1 lb of glitter is a LOT of glitter! I bought 1/2 lb once and have refilled my white three or four times, plus shared with friends, and I still have a whole lot left. You might want to get that much of the main colors if the price is good, but I wouldn't recommend buying the less used colors in such large quantities, as you'd just never be able to use it all. Even a small bottle will last you a really long time. It only takes a few puffs of glitter to dust a face, so you're really using only tiny tiny amounts per child.

Hope this helps!

Don't think I have seen those poof bottles, thought it was just regular glitter botttles, but now Angie talks about holes in them.. How does that work?

It's just a little dispenser bottle. Kim's come without a hole, so you can insert a needle to make your own tiny hole in the "nose" of the bottle. If the hole is the right size, when you tip the bottle nose-down and lightly squeeze it, a little burst of glitter and air will come "poofing" out to settle over a face.

Check it out at http://www.chitchattheclown.com/glitter.html

Thanks Kristal! (Web / graphic design is my day job).

Have any of you had any problems ordering from chitchattheclown above? I ask because the web site looks a little do-it-yourself. (no offense Surprised)

They are all basically like the old bottles you used to get gutta for silk painting in, in asstd new designs with different methods of capping them. Some poof, some don't and sort of squirt, some you have to snip the tip off a little to make them work better or else keep a pin handy.

I got some from Bibi then found similar in a beauty chemists in Hong Kong. I have been converted & transferred all my favourite glitters into them.

If you drop them you don't loose a whole pot of glitter, they do send a puff over the face/hand etc nicely and you can still unscrew the top to stick a damp brush in if you want fine detailed glitter highlights.

Just make sure to tell them to shut their eyes before you puff! And to expect a puff of air.

And yes DON'T get craft glitter, even these cosmetic grade polyester glitter dusts can irritate eyes but at least won't scratch eyeballs like razor-edged metal flakes would! You can still get metallic cosmetic glitters but TBH they look better on glitter tatts most of the time than on faces.

Yes, Kim Hatch (chitchat the clown) is well known in the face painting community and her business is well run. I order all of my glitter and Snazaroo from her. The website is pretty bare-bones, but you'll get your items in good time and maybe a few little extra goodies thrown in too. My only complaint is that her shipping is calculated (I assume?) by how much you've spent, so if you are buying lots of glitter tat stencils or other lightweight items, the shipping is pricey. I've emailed her before to ask for a lower shipping rate though and she was quick to refund half of the shipping I'd paid.
