Scales from tangerine nets

Post by Sparklyone on Fri Jun 24, 2011 1:13 am

I was so excited to try making snake scales from a piece of tangerine netting after seeing some gorgeous work here. Then felt like a complete moron as I sponged black over my Bright Leaf arty cake snake. affraid DOH. Laughing The snake I saw someone do here (I can't find the thread now) looked like it hard darker scales...maybe I am remembering wrong?

Will you please share your technique for making scales using produce netting? Thank you so much! I love you

I have not tried using tangerine net, but a net made of soft metal, but guess the technique is the same (it would just be easier with something with less risk of moving). But the trick is to have the paint on the sponge really dry and first try somewhere else.

Maybe a few shades darker than the color that you're using?
Or, as michelle says, gold... or something metalic

was it me? i know it was mentioned recently with this picture...

I used my leaf tag one stroke then because his arms were thin enough i could wrap the clementine net around his arm. Then i took a darker snaz green and dobbed it over (you can see where i dobbed a little too hard on one of the snakes lol oh well he was excited Smile ). I also use it for one of my mostery-dragony masks for scales. Often my scales aren't matched up exactly on both sides of a mask but I'm usually the only one who notices lol

It sure WAS you! I love you My son is drooooooling over your awesome snakes! I'm wondering if I have the wrong kind of netting...mine is orange with holes big enough that the paint doesn't do scales but instead makes black marks the size of the netting holes. It seems like it should be the right size but it's not working....I'll try it again and post some pics for help if you all don't mind. Smile

Awww shucks Smile thanks! That was my first time trying those snakes haha I thought they'd come out a lot worse but the boy was pretty please which made me happy.
My netting came off of a box of clemetines. The holes are oval shapped and approx the smae size as the plastic webbing...maybe a little smaller. I'll take a picture later to show you Smile

So i was a bit off on describing the size of the holes lol I blame the thunderstorms last night. Every time there's a good thunderstorm my IIH goes crazy and my brain goes a little fuzzy Rolling Eyes but what are you gonna do right? lol
so here's the pic...my cell phone isn't the best camera but you can see the size of the holes Smile The lighting kinda makes it discolored looking but it really is all orange haha

Here's what I've done.
I paint the base darker & then sponge the lighter color over the mesh bag. The green one I used a swatch from fishnet stockings.

This one I used an tangerine bag.

This is what I use them for:

I recently made a "frame" for it with some duct tape.
