Greetings from OZ

Post by debranewmanart on Sun Jun 26, 2011 5:35 pm

My name is Debra. I'm a Native American artist originally from Missouri, but happily transplanted to Kansas for the past 16 years. I spent nearly 9 in art school, first at Central Missouri State University studying commercial art, then the University of Missouri Kansas City studying studio art.

As with many of you I began face painting because people asked me to volunteer my talents at various events. It was fun, different and the smiles got me hooked. Very Happy

I've only recently begun paid face painting and so far I'm enjoying it very much. The difficult part is learning to be fast. For years I took 40 hours or more to complete a work of art to near perfection. Now it needs to be done in minutes. My hat is off to those of you who make this look so easy!

Everyone seems very nice here and I'm looking forward to a long and happy association with you all.

Welcome Debra,
Speed is definitely not my strong suit but still working on it. Glad to have another artist. Look forward to seeing your work.

Welcome! I'm not an extremely patient person and I've found that I kind of like the fact that you can impress and delight an "audience" with just 5 minutes of work. It makes it part fine art and part performance art ...particularly when there's a crowd watching you. I took some art classes in college (not nearly as many as 9 years worth) and I find that parts of it are just so tedious. There's nobody making me paint or draw uninteresting subjects for hour after hour, day after day. Plus, people are more impressed by less in this business. I can paint a canvas and be happy with it, but really it's just mediocre art or amateurish painting but I can do a half way decent face painting and it's all the party guests can talk about. Smile
