Who Uses Star Blends?

Post by Metina on Wed Jul 06, 2011 8:06 am

Hiya,

Just wondering how many on here use or have considered using Star Blends, a powder make-up that many face painters use to hold up in the heat.

http://www.mehron.com/StarBlend_Cake_Makeup_p/110.htm

Please feel free to comment on you use or ask questions about this product as well.

Thanks!

I got three colors Red,white and Blue and was so glad I got them for the 4th it was 100* and they saved our gig! the coverage looks just like paint! So glad I got them, I also have the BenNye Luminare pallet and with those combined I was able to do some nice colorful masks

i use them for tigers and spiderman in the summer.. also the pink is nice for fairies/kitties/blush/princesses/butterflies... etc. careful though, as they can break while shipping.. got a red last year that was all busted up.

I hate white but have never tried it on a gig. Concerns I have are that it takes longer to apply, and will stay powdery all day and get all over things when the face is touched. Valid concerns, or no big deal?

I love white for bases!! I use it on white puppies, etc. As for the longer to apply, I disagree... Well, it depends what you use to apply it. I use compact poof things from walmart and they fit right in the container.

Here are a few designs I have done with starblends... Don't judge, some are really old pictures lol

I use them for Spiderman/Venom, small spiderweb eye design, pirate, and Hello Kitty mask Smile I only have red, black, and white. I know some of the other colors are not so good. I would love to try more colors, just not sure which ones are good!

I did a spiderweb design on a fireman this past weekend. The red powder was fine, but the black paint sweated off within a few hrs Sad He was running around the festival so it was bound to happen in 100 degree weather.

Here are two designs. The Hello Kitty was my first run with the powder. I didn't like the way the red looked so light over top of the white. I just paint the bow on now Wink

This is after a whole day of full face Starblends yellow, then green on top for a green Fiona. I like it because it doesn't feel like I have anything on which is important when you are full face. It's starting to look a bit blotchy here, but then I'd worked all day in it. I use the lollipop sponges to apply. It did take awhile, but I covered a lot of area. Very Happy

I have a couple of hand me down starblends that I scored in the forum swap shop. I used them for the first time on the Fourth of July- I had a hard time working with them but that could be mostly because I'm not used to them... regardless, I probably won't use them again unless it's a million degrees and humid. But for occasions like that, I'm glad to have them in my kit and am seriously considering getting a few more colors so I can accomplish at least my most basic designs inside a volcano.

I got a few colors to try, but was unimpressed with what seemed to be uneven coverage to me. Also, when I used it for a Spiderman face on my son, he was inadvertently wiping it off on the couch cushions all day. Later, when he started sweating, it looked all blotchy. I wouldn't use them again.

I got the white while at Twist N Shout and tried it for the second time tonight...I don't know. I'm not keen on how light the coverage is, and as I got it mostly for Spidey eyes, I'm thinking that the dust from it might be more fidgety than squinty eyes when using regular fp.

I'm going to keep it on hand and try it on an actual child at some point; it may end up in the swap shop, though Razz

I have nine colo9rs of starblends and they are most definitely my go to in really muggy humid weather. They stay on great and I also have some people that just prefer the feel of powder over paint on their skin, so it's nice to be able to offer an alternative.

I am glad I have them and will continue t use them in my kit.

Re: Who Uses Star Blends?

I just painted a skull with half Starblend and half paradise paint to see how they hold up, feel on, how easy to apply, ect. against each other.

After some practice I am starting to get the hang of applying the starblend. Didn't realize how different it would be Smile. Both sides of the skull took about the same time to apply.

I actually liked the translucent white look for a skull better from the starblend rather then the opaque base from Paradise. Unfortunately though the starblend didn't last like the Paradise paint. (although it isn't very humid and muggy now....maybe the humidity helps keep it intact). The starblend was flaking after an hour.

The Paint you could 'feel' on your face. While the Starblend was so light I almost forgot it was on there until my one year old came home from Grandma's and started cracking up at me. Very Happy

I want to try it again when I am outside and about to see if the hot weather affects it too.

I am definitely thinking squirmy little boys would prefer the starblend because they usually don't like the feel on paint or 'make-up' on their eyes...while the feel of the Starblends is minimal.

Does it rub off on things and smudge if they rub their face?

I love the idea of a paint that doesn't melt in this humidity

I just received some starblends, in red, white and yellow.

From practicing on my daughter Smile I like the coverage, but the red seems to have stained her hand (I used it dry with a smoothie applicator...) I haven't read anything about red staining before, has anyone else had this happen? Regular paints don't stain her like this.

I also just got some Amerikan body art micah powders, which seem to be mainly more about the shimmer, than the colour (I ordered white - I really like, pink - I like okay, blue - not sure about it - more evident colour but not as shiny.)

I think I may order orange, pink and black starblends next time so that I can complete skulls/tigers/butterflys etc. But I'll wait 'til my order from the forum store here arrives, so I can see how well I like the new paradise paints for blending etc.

What are the loose Ben Nye Lumiere powders like in comparison to the Starblends? Anyone know?
The BNL powders (at least the loose ones) seem to have versatility in the wet/dry option and lots of juicy colours. I've seen them demo'd at my lfps a few times with different colours but I haven't worked with them myself to know coverage, transfer resistance, or long term wear performance answers.

Anyone?

I have a Lumiere Luxe powder in ice. It is sparkly like the lumiere pressed powder. The starblend is not sparkly at all. You can use it to lightly dust (with blusher) over paint to give it a light shimmer if using metallic would be too strong. I haven't found much use for it, however.

I have red, white and orange starblend. I used it for a while for spiderman, but i didn't like the way the dust floated around the eyes when I was applying it.I also found more kids would get itchy noses, again probably from the dust that floats in the air from the starblend.

So, I don't use them much. I find the white useful on grownup faces almost like a setting powder over white bases.
