Corsets ! Tips and Best Practices! Help!

Post by WyndyO on Fri Jun 12, 2009 11:49 pm

Do you outline in a light colored paint to lay out the shapes evenly and then begin to build and fill in?

What things have you learned worked best? What things would you avoid doing?
Do you protect the model's jeans/pants while painting a corset?

I want to be able to do a simplified 30 to 45 minute corset per girl for a night club gig and willl have 3 or 4 of them to paint. They may be wearing swimsuit tops for me to paint over. Would you try to incorporate or throw in a necklace, or garter embellishment if time allowed? Would you suggest bringing an assistant?

Thanks everyone!!! Wyndy in Tampa

I outline with white liner pencil... layout the edges, the detail (i.e. laces, etc. I like to draw out the laces for over/under so I get them right!) for placement, etc.

If you expect to be messy, sure, cover their pants... you could tuck a towel in their waists or wrap a cape around them.

I find sitting on stools is most comfortable - them a little higher than me.

IF you have time (and if you only have 45 min each you probably won't) sure, throw in a choker or gloves or even a mask.

Make sure to have models with a waist. Not all woman have ;-)

What Shannon said. I just outline with the ground colour. Make sure your colours are fast to apply, you don't wan't to use a lot of time on the primary layer. For night clubs, make BIG details. People don't see small laces and so.

I find using liquids and BIG brushes best for speed - I used Tim Gratton black cut with 50% water, 1 inch flats and filberts, to get the colour on, then #6 rounds to finish the edges, and whatever needed to do details... I was going for the black leather look on these... more examples here http://www.shannonfennell.com/bodypaint2.html

This took about an hour.... there were two of us working on two girls at a time. We ended up doing 6 girls in about 7 hours... (allowing for some of them being late, spending MY time on their hair and make-up, etc.)

Shannon- You are so great to share your knowledge and pics and links!!! You have saved "my biscuits" more than once now as I venture out of my comfort zone! Thank you thank you thank you!!!

p.s. bought your "Your Face or Mine" book for a beginner and she loved it. I really like how you spent time talking about the things like loading, blending, these are some of the things that are hard to "get" unless you have a knowledgeable person to show you.

Lone Wolf - Thanks! Good points!! I will try and just paint my outline.

You guys are so awesome.!!!!! I will try and post pics!

Great example of make it big and bold for nightclubs - those laces really stand out.

I did a practice on my daughter with the Fantasy Worldwide Red cream paint. It was super thick and goopy-ish. Should I have put more water in it. The color was so vibrant in photos and real life - I think my traditional water activated cakes would have looked a little more washed out when they dried. Should I not use the creams? hmmmmmmm

Also think about if the colours will leave colour elsewhere. I tryed the Fantasy Woldwide Cobber, and found it so beautiful!! But if the model should be able to get near anything I had to powder it so heavily that the shine got lost Sad

That's why I like the Tim Gratton for body painting - it is an acrylic based liquid body paint and dries completely! No transfer at all and doesn't need powdering (unless you want to add shimmer or something). It was applied in the photo with a flat brush - as you can see it dries completely flat, no streaks, etc. Complete coverage.. depending on how much you cut it with water you can vary the thickness/opaqueness of the paint.

Great input! Maybe I should throw a little shimmer on it!!!! After all I love the color intensity and ease of application - and it is for the "night club" atmosphere - so looking more blingy is a plus!!! YOU GUYS ARE SO AWESOME!!!

I am so excited since this is my first night club gig. My contact said I can stay and paint the club patrons too!!! Now I gotta figure out my lamplight and setup situation for that and what to charge for by the "piece" stuff and whether to add some blacklight or glitter latex designs....for extra impact!

Thanks LoneWolf and Shannon for your input. You really helped my working thru the issues of uncharted territory YET AGAIN!!!!

I thought I would update you that I went with sketches of about 8 or 10 corset designs and when I got there none of the girls wanted them since that was their daily workwear there. I painted all kinds of things and each girl chose something different of their own choosing. I may post some of the pics here........ of the end results. It was a lot of fun!! and WOOO HOOOO I got invited back!!!!

LoneWolf are you at Seboden??

Shannon did you make a mint on Canada Day engagements??

I worked the dayjob on Canada Day. The events around here go cheap and use "volunteers" with crap "non-toxic" stuff... And since I don't do PPF, I worked the Stat at the store instead.

Posted a few (7) pics in my gallery of my interesting "evening" at the nite club.

http://www.facepaintforum.com/gallery/Personal-album-of-WyndyO/Personal-album-of-WyndyO-cat_u150.htm

I got invited back so I am pumped to step it up a few notches and try a few new things!!! Plus I am painting a professional model in a sports jersey "paint" with professional photographer at the actual stadium locker room! So next I will be asking for hints on doing the shirt and cutoff look... Have any of you done it?
