Any advice for larger venues?

Post by Bec on Wed Jul 13, 2011 11:13 pm

I was hired for a circus. They want me to bring my own board to paint from and it needs to be quick stuff because there will be a long line. How many designs do you think I should offer?

Is there anything else you have learned from experience at these types of events? ANything you wished someone had told you before you worked?

Cool! I did an event for Universoul circus recently. It was mad. I took my 6 quickest designs and had kids bend to rest their elbows on my stool instead of sitting in it. I sat on my rolling case which puts me slightly lower than them. And I had a board with the faces they could choose right beside me so they could point when I asked "which one?" The thing I wish someone had told me is that I would need extra crowd control- there was serious shoving.

I worked for a large venue before, and first you need control in the line, I bring small size post it numeric pads, so everyone has a number, I have a pic of a fast spider man, buterfly, side rainbow mask, dragon, dog, cat, skull, heart mask, flowers, pirat, and two diferent desigs of each on mind, to bring an arty cake for the buterfly and side rainbow mask helps a lot, remember you will have a long line and everybody may like to go see the atractions as fast as they can, I hope it helps, good luck!!! Very Happy

3 designs for boys and 3 for girls and try to use one split cake for the boys and one for the girls.

like boys you could do a snake scorpion and spider with any 1 spilt cake
leaf would work, so would red and black or black and blue

girls you could do a split cake crown, split cake base around eyes and then swirls and maybe a butterfly face? or if that is too big use the crown split cake and a fan brush to do some cheek ones

The last circus I went to with my daughter had face painting, and they only offered tigers in different colors. Pink, Purple, Orange and Red if I remember correctly. Of course everyone loved it, so I don't think in that situation, a huge number of designs would be required to make everyone happy Smile I don't have much advice to give because I've never done anything like that, but I wish you the best of luck Smile

ok well leave it to me to swim up stream, or maybe its because the kids here know me and they expect more or I am just a masochist but when I tried dropping the number of faces I offered to only six or so for a new gig it totally backfired on me. It took the kids twice as long to pic what they wanted and the parents stood there with there eyebrows up or talked the kids out of it.
What I ended up doing was bribing my kid to sit for me, timed my self and went through my board. The fastest ones go low were the little ones can see them and progress as they get higher (Oh except for the teen stuff up to the top). Any thing that takes more then 5 min to paint gets cut out. Well unless its a crowed stopper and is worth an extra two min and that one go's way high.
Other then that extra wippys, an extra mirror or three cus when it rains it pores, one of those big orange drinking water coolers with a spigot at the bottom, having it right there to refresh your well is so cool and for the love of all that is holly, a gofer so u can go potty or get a coordinator u need to talk to or what ever.
Dont worry to much about eating cus ya haha prob not going to happen. Oh and the girls are right line control is very importune, but when i am solo witch i usually am I just bark out that the line starts here and to count 5 min a head in front of you, to please keep track and help your naber remember were they were.
