Struggling with boy designs... any suggestions?

Post by jennvangogh on Fri Jul 15, 2011 1:31 am

I have been trying to build a collection of easy boy designs and I have trouble with the boys. It seems I can swirl and flower my heart out to no end with the girls designs. But for some reason I get hung up on all the boys ones. I have been asked reccently for non scary designs... which really is tricky for me because I gravitate towards the skulls and blood/monster faces. Any ideas?? Do guys do characters? I find it difficult to do characters on the younger ones too as they wiggle too much for the tiny line work. I would love to hear some of your guys suggestions for easy 5 min and under designs. I got the typical snake, spidey, bat, dragon. But compared to my girls collections it seems so bleek.

If you do a search on the forums for boy designs you'll get TONS of posts, pictures and ideas Smile It's a never ending quest lol.

Also on you tube look up marvelous masks chicago (Clayton, he's on here too) and go all the way back to his first stuff. He does a TON of boy designs, and his recent ones are awesome too, he's got some gorgeous eye design videos up.

And welcome Smile There's a couple of us on here from BC Smile I'm up north in Prince George

IMO boys typically like what they like - I mean it's like when you go shopping for them - the choices for girls is literally never ending, skirts, dresses, tights, shorts, t-shirts blouses, cardigans etc without even touching on shoes and make ups and hair things and jewelry.... where boys have less choice, in styles and colors and couldn't give a stuff about accessories.
( I am fully aware there are the special exceptions to this rule - my nephew reminds me of this constantly)
So really it's the same with face painting.... I don't think the boys mind not having too much choice - if you ask my man he likes everything clear cut and simple.
That said - every boy loves a super hero and there is a never ending list of those!

You will always get requests for Spiderman. It never gets old. Also, Mario is popular.Any superhero and video game character really. Optimus Prime from Tranformers is picked alot too.

I have the same problem...and MY son only wants the scary stuff, and my girls won't let me practice any non-scary boy stuff on them.
some animal faces would be good for boys (dog, wolf, tiger), friendly dragons, dinos, sharks...those are the only things I have come up with :S

my son is 11 and is too cool for face paint. I bribe him sometimes to get his face painted... not my proudest moments. But he is a good sport and I keep telling him if I make more money he gets more toys.

Has anyone ever done any xbox character designs? My son loves halo reach etc and if I could up the cool factor I am sure I would be doing less bribing and he would be the one asking me for paint. At least I hope that would happen. I may be dreaming here...
