Finally Completed my board!

Post by Daizy on Fri Jul 15, 2011 6:17 pm

I have been painting for 18 months and have only just completed a menu board!

Up until now I have used photos, in albums, on a magnetic strip, stuck to a children's black/white board. I have had banners with my favourites for advertising but then am always having to deal with people picking from the signs. Most of the time people just pick what ever they choose and with in reason we will try and paint it.

Any way, I have been wanting to make a board that still looks cool while showing paintings that I can actually paint at an event. The tricky part has been taking the time to paint and take photos of the most commonly asked for simple and quick designs, and then convincing my models to let me paint it on them (the vampire/ dinosaur/ dragon (boy stuff) required a lot of bribery Wink )

So here is my finished result.... Vista print is having a sale (surprise surprise) so I am hoping to get them printed on lawn signs and banners for just a few dolars.
I haven't sent them off to be printed just yet, so any advice on things you would suggest changing, faces etc. I would love to hear your feed back.

I adore it!

I'm concerned about if you want to change photos, though. That's why I haven't done a sign/banner. I know that with the sales it's relatively inexpensive to get things done at VP

Also I love the clean lines and design, but what about adding names? Unless you had a copy of the board on hand that you could see - it's a bit frustrating when (even with names), people point to the photo on the board, and the board is facing away from you. Left my "seeing through doors" glasses at home Razz You've got multiple flower and butterfly designs, so making up names to keep track of which design is which might be helpful...just a suggestion!

I think I will always keep a small copy with me on my table.
The signs are also usually see through so I am hoping I can figure out which one they point to.

I am not really saying anywhere that these are the faces you have to choose from, rather as a guide or inspiration for those that want it. I am still happy to paint what ever else they request.

I always love your work and your photography! I think it looks great and good choices on hand. You could make a note on the bottom - 'more selections available upon request' or something along those lines.

I'm still stuck on the fact that you have only been painting for 18 months! Exclamation Your work is so amazing, and you are such an inspiration!! I think the board looks great! I also don't limit myself to a board, but find when I am doing a PPF event, having a board up brings more business!! I might have to check out VP too! I wish my little models were as cooperative as yours! They are so cute!

The selection looks fantastic. cheers

As the designs vary in size is there different pricing or are they all the same price. I remember someone on here (oops sorry forgot who) had a banner with a 3 stage pricing bracket. Did you see this post. So she had one design that could be either $3, $5 & $8. & a possibility of 140 design choices in all. Not that I'm suggesting that your need to provide that many choices just more thinking on the pricing side. Cause some of your designs I could see you doing really quickly & others taking more time.

Love the board Daizy, it looks so clean and crisp, even thought the pictures have a black background the white background makes them look so airy and fresh.

I love your work! The only suggestion I'd have (maybe for future boards) is to have some older models. Teens & adults would be more likely to get painted if they see a picture of someone their own age with an awesome design.

It looks wonderful Very Happy Very clean and professional. Haven't made my own display board yet (I've been avoiding it like the plague) so I wouldn't know what works and what doesn't, but I agree with contrachapado - perhaps having some photos of older models in the mix will lure more adults into your chair.

Re: Finally Completed my board!

Post by Daizy on Sat Jul 16, 2011 4:44 am

Thank you all for your input.

I am hoping if I do really need to change them, I could temporarily print off a single square and stick it over the picture I want to replace.

I did toss up adding in an older model, but I didn't have enough decent photos of quick faces to use. Something I need to work on.
I kind of liked the uniformity of keeping the same faces, and I just hope that painting myself and any friends there it will encourage the older people. I have never had any photos of older people up before and have always had many older people lining up to get their faces painted.

Mandi, I am hoping to just use it as a guide. There are a couple on there that I would consider the smaller cheaper designs (the blue butterfly), other than that they are all my regular rate. I know some will take a little longer but then the quicker ones should speed up the line again.

I am scared putting prices, categories or numbers on them will turn it into a board that people must pick from. And then I miss out on all the spontaneous ones like the fox's I were asked for today.

Your banner looks great. They are seriously beautiful kids!!!!

I'm not sure about sticking another photo over an existing photo - this may look tacky . . and your work is far from that! Your painting is amazing and the presentation on this banner reflects your professionalism! It would seem a shame to have a "patched up" banner once you cover one design with another (just a thought).

The photo on your avatar is awesome too. Is that you?

Daizy, I love it! It's perfect!

I keep a small book of matching photos of my board in my kit. I am hoping to have a larger photo album of other bigger more extreme things for hem to pick from as well Smile

You can always make a second banner with older kids or newer designs Wink

I'm a VP junkie. I like how you've used the vertical orientation this way. Makes me think...
I did a private party, first a couple of littles. Then some girls came up and asked what I had for "tweens" ( I handed them a binder). They both walked away happy and 'dignified' in their own way . A pair of young-twenties came up and looked through another binder...They were ecstatic. Fun job.

I'm thinking that your instinct to keep your models uniform is a good one. I would keep that banner, like I would a child's binder. Your next step would be a different sub=brand...make another perhaps smaller VP banner, slightly different graphics, more adult designs. Make it a boutique offering. People like to be different, but also identify with more than just their whim.

I don't have a board either but may work on that over the winter if time and finances allow. It would really help at the market. I love the board you created. It is welcoming and easy to see the different designs available. It would be a draw for sure IMHO. Great job, as always. I am also stuck on the "18 months" thing. WOW!
