Night time lighting solution!

Post by Amanda on Sun Jul 17, 2011 11:58 pm

I've just finished my second of a three day gig for a college. The events are all at night in an outdoor common area. The lighting is HORRIBLE! The first day I just suffered thru, and had to actually read the back of my paints to make sure I picked up the right color! This time though, I tried something new....
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I picked this thing up months ago just out of curiosity, but never actually used it. I think it was around $12 at walmart in the hardware deptartment. It worked GREAT! I could see everything really well, and it wasn't too uncomfortable after an hour and a half... Although for next time I'll put a piece of a sponge between the lamp and my head. I looked rediculous, but it actually really impressed everyone... They kept calling me "legit". Wink The best thing is it doesn't add any bulk to my kit! It's a perfect little solution for those night time gigs. Just thought I'd share. Smile

Super smart! And it aimed the light right where you were looking! It does look pretty funny! Thanks for sharing!

Like it! Could have used one of those at a recent gig. I'm actually doing a big festival in the fall and I need to think of a lighting solution that
1. does not require electricity
2. does not require a generator
3. won't break the bank

This looks good for me!

I love it! I'm glad you got use out of it. I think we've all bought things hoping to use it...and never do. Great idea

This IS a good idea, but I wonder, did you have any issues with it being too bright shining in people's eyes?

I have about 8 of those (work perks) and I thought about using them but never got around to doing it. I have a 900 lumens LED lantern that I keep in my car and it lights a pretty large area, but it would be cool to have something tossed in my tool box for just in case...

I didn't have anyone complain about the light. But I was painting mostly all full faces so I had them close their eyes most of the time. But the lamp I bought actually has different settings... I think it has 8 LED bulbs in it, and it will either use all 8, only 4 or 6 I believe, so you can adjust how bright it is. I don't even know which one I had it on since I was adjusting it once it was already on my head. The one I got also came with the batteries, so I didn't even have to worry about having them on me. Smile

I really liked how I didn't have to have one light set up pointing the person and another lighting up my kit. I almost bought a few different table type lights, but this was a cheaper and simpler solution. I don't know if I'd want it on for like 4 hours, but I was fine after 1 1/5. You can adjust the strap length too.

I love, love, love my pink Petzl headlamp. So useful, especially for packing up at the end of the night and finding little things like lost paintbrushes or escaped sponges on the ground.

I used this twice so far. The clients just close their eyes - no problem at all! I also have a little camping lantern on my FatMax, lighting up my paints and tabletop. It sure beats using the light from all the mom's cell phones (yup, I did that the first time! it was fun though!!!).

Picked one up a couple of years ago for a town Halloween Ghostwalk, along with a flashlight that has a lantern light built into the handle and a bungee cord so you can attach it to things. Both work great for outdoor in the dark events. Take up no space at all.

My local Bunnings ( Hardware) store has black baseball caps with little LED lights in the rim of the brim.... they are really cool and only about $20.... beats the miner look but my man still said I looked silly. lol

There is another one you can get that sits on a special hangy thing around your neck... I will look for it online and see if I can find it.... the last one I saw was pink I should have bought it.

At festivals which have electric, I use spot lamps clamped to the booth framework. But I keep my headlamp right next to me in my kit area. Every now and then, if the festival lighting to the tent lamps suddenly goes off for a few minutes (it happens!), when I am in the middle of painting, I just rapidly grab my headlamp, put it on, and keep painting. It definitely gets me a smile and a "cool face painter" rating from the kid and family! Surprised)

I went ahead and bought one. I reallly actually love the hat. I bought the kind that clips to the bill of a hat too to keep in my kit. I can iuse them for other things like when I walk my neighborhood at night or want to read in bed when the lights are out. I'm sure I have a booklight somehwere but the hat is very well made and super comfortable. The one I bought was actually  sold as a dog-walking hat.

I have 2 of those triangular clips, bought at Walmart a few years ago. They tilt, so you can adjust where you want the light, have Hi/Low light levels as well as on/off buttons & cost about $10.00! One clips onto my sun visor. (hate wearing baseball hats) I also use a battery operated lantern I found at Costco. I've given the 2nd "clip-on" to my assistant (or another FP'er who had no lights) to use & together w/the lantern, they're all we need for a night-time gig w/out electricity.
