Refilling Palettes

Post by nikisteel on Tue Jul 19, 2011 4:57 pm

To all the experts out there: I'm looking for the pros and cons on refilling palettes. I have the DFX Essential 12 color palette. I like the fact that I have 12 colors and it does not take up much space in my tiny little case. I don't really want to lug around a large case yet. So I was thinking I could buy the 32 grams of the colors I run out of, refill the individual color in the palette, and leave the larger cake at home. How hard would it be to refill? (I do keep a large black and white cake in my case since those seem to be used more than the other colors.)
Pros/Cons?

When I first started out I did that and I got tired of running out of a color while I was painting and having to mess with filling it up, But that is just me. I know some people transfer their paint into bead cases so that it is more compact.

I've only taken smaller paints and transfered them to bigger cakes, but I would think it wouldn't be much different. I use an xacto knife to cut the paint out and shape it to fit Smile

Just scoop and smash. There really is no wrong way to do it. I have a little water color pallette that I keep filled with all of my colors so I can practice without pulling out my whole kit. Infact, I keep it in the coffee table drawer with a few brushes, a sponge, spraybottle and wipes.

I have the DFX 12 color, 6 color metallic and neons for my at home practice/travel kit. I don't like using up the paints in my working kit so I have a separate set. I refill my palettes all the time

Thank you all for your replies. I think I will refill my 12 color palette for a while.
