Re: Cake Painting

Post by Kristal on Thu Jul 28, 2011 4:44 am

Oh my! Thanks for the kind words! (Sorry for the delayed reply - I thought July was supposed to be a slow month! Sheesh. Razz)

It took FOREVER for the icing colours to dry! I made it Friday night and when I brought it out Sunday afternoon for our BBQ, there were still some wet spots...

Trinkie - yes, the first time I've ever used fondant! I was nervous about getting it to lie flat, watched one YouTube video and had totally psyched myself out...so relieved when it turned out!

Cabby - I don't think I'd have time for another forum Razz Even keeping up with this one is hard sometimes!

Thanks Shannon, Linda & Mandi! I really liked painting it - but having to bake a cake (Even from a mix) and cover it with fondant were not things I'm really all that interested in, you know? If I could find and pair up with a baker who wanted a decorator that would be awesome! I would love to charge some serious $$$ to paint. But it took hours to do everything and if I was to do scratch cakes - when I paint, I can see what is good and what needs to be tweaked. When I'm baking, I have no idea how it's going to taste until it's actually eaten. My stuff from scratch (when I actually have time to bake something!) is overall pretty good, but I don't want to take the chance of something bombing in the taste dept Razz

This, being a mix, tasted as promised! French vanilla mix, with an extra dollop of pure vanilla extract from Mexico poured in. Can't fail with a mix, haha. (Well, I guess technically you COULD...)

Tia - not dark vanilla extract though, right?! Didn't think about buttercream as a highlight - hence sticking on a teensy ball of fondant for the dolphin's eye, lol.

Tamara, make sure you post yours!

Eva - maybe it's time to research custom cake prices? Haha. I think that would mean, like I said before, teaming up with a baker...I might try to get through the summer season first Razz

Vickery - oh wow really?! (Though if you think about it, I'm guessing that a 2 tier cake takes longer to make and decorate than the amount of time it would take us to earn that as pro fp's...blows your mind sometimes, doesn't it?!) Take this photo in next time and ask them if they can copy it Razz Then maybe you can post it on Cake Wrecks?!

Shandi, Debra, Synni, Tara, and Kat - Very Happy I love you

Thanks Rae! Ooh, can you imagine mum getting painted with the same design that's on her shower cake? How cool would that be?!

Right, has to be clear vanilla extract. Water is okay too.

I acctually am a qualified sugar artist that was my back gound befor face painting If you want it to not have the glossy look and dry not smudge you have to mix the food colouring with vodka - must be 40% proof. the alchol evaporates from the cake in about 2 hours leaving it cosumer friendly.

This was one I painted in about 1 hour (I acctually was given 7 hours notice to make a cake in the shape of a their house key ice it put a dragon on it and get it to them 1 hours drive away no time for too much detail) the client just wanted a dragon on a Key nothing else. Vs my sons request for a redback spider that I painted while on the on the phone took about 45 min This isn't sellable because the colour never drys properly (bleeds) ignore the eyes I made some but while i was on the phone the kids ate them so had to use marsh mellows-LOL as it was only for him didn't mind

Having said that I mainly do sugar flower stuff the flowers made of icing sugar and bridge work stuff sticking of side of cake i.e all flowers icing sugar below and extentions of the side

Honestly try food colouring and alchol
For white make somthing called sugar paste - google it if you do the alchol method you can then use the patse (white) on top as it won't bleed through.
buttercream has a tendancy to allow the butter to seep through into the fondant and destroy the image -due to the oil/butter in it. why we don't mix the two together unless we can hide the mark (i.e underneath crumb coat). if you have to you can do this at the last minute as you have deepending on humidity about 1 hour before this will happen
see bodice on doll my daugter broke this 1 hour before due time it was a very quick emergency buttercream fix
Hope this helps.
forgot to mention wilton makes packet mixes I dont use them but have tasted them and the mud mix is good. and if your worried about the taste when you level (cut the top bit off) try a bit of the excess. but if you want something easy to cover try pound cakes they hold there shape well.

For fondant drape it over a rolling pin and use other hand on near side if stuggling makes it a little easyer no cracking or tearing or raised finger indents. took me years to figure that out.
Current orders in progress for two different cakes combine for photo (taken on phone camera)

love the cake better than my first attempt, I wish somone would let me paint a cake I always get sugar flower orders, as most people cant do them anymore why people get sent to me. I am trying to get out of cake decorating'due to this I am pigeon hole so cant be creative anymore. to me its like painting spidy over and over for hours on end
