Arm Bands with Stencils

Post by Denise Cold on Fri Jul 29, 2011 1:19 am

It was a slow day at the fair so Emma and I played with some stencils that I bought (at Walmart) to add texture to masks. We made some arm bands (and a face design) that turned out cool. I'd actually seen someone on Facebook make armbands for her painters (and clients) at a zoo gig and I thought it was a fun idea.

So we put down the stencil and then added shadows or black, etc. to add to the effect. I thought they were cool...make me feel like Wonder Woman. My favorite is the alligator with the teeth fringe.

Those are awesome! Were they in the scrapbooking/crafts section?

I just got the fairy stencil that Snaz offers and I'm looking forward to using it. I've been playing with it and I think I can make it work for superfast single eye/cheek designs that little girls will love.

For that big of armbands I did have to move the stencil 3 times so if you want to make it quick, match the band to the stencil size so you only have to move it once.

That's awsome! You're awsome! Thank you.
How long does it take you to complete one ?
I have 2 big gigs coming up and this might be a great way to handle a lot of people. I also like it because I really enjoy body painting more than face painting.

Re: Arm Bands with Stencils

I think they would be quick if you planned the size so that you only had to move the stencil once. The pattern is 3" x 3.5" inches so if you made the cuff 3.5 inches high you could wrap it around the arm by moving it once. I also went only half-way around the arm.

It would be quick (like the giraffe one) with only two colors and no details other than the band. If you wanted to beef up the band, you could use a 3/4 inch brush and THEN add the fringe detail.

My daughter did the face with white as the base and then sponged with rainbow. It looks like the color is peeking through and you can't see it but there was liquid bling at the center of each flower. That would make a cool armband too.

I think the stencil set was only about $2.00...I'll have to check my receipt. I'll do another one and time it.

I did the cuff on the left in 3 minutes with the stencil and making it just high enough for the stencil. I used a 3/4 brush to make the band & also the fringe by tamping the bristles on end. I did the freehand one on the right in 2.5 minutes with the 3/4 brush but the pattern obviously isn't as nice.

I worry about how messy the stencil would get when you had to do band after band. I wonder if the time savings wouldn't be lost with cleanup. Has anyone else worked with non-airbrushing stencils?
