Post by run on Sun Jul 31, 2011 12:36 pm

How to get work

I did a my first gig for my sons playgroup
They held a big fun day for families
There where over 100 families there
The day was great alot of people loved my work
I had about 5 mothers ask me about booking with me
I handed them a card and told them that they call me with the date
And detail of the event and I would book them in
I have not heard from any of them
Some advice of where I went wrong and what I can do to
Get clients I am new at this and really want to get gigs
But nothing is happening
Help please

You can put out a notebook for people to put their name and email address, so you can send out "updates" every so often. Keeps you in their mind.

You can also write something like..."10% discount if you book by the end of August", on some of your business cards... (Their event doesn't have to be in August, just booked by then)

Don't worry about it too much. They may not have a need for you just yet. The kid's birthday might not be till Nov, for example.

Sometimes it's just that they are saving your card for the birthday party that is 9 months from now---(I just got a call from someone who got my card 3 years ago, and hung onto it!) Keep smilin'!!

new businesses take a couple of years to build things up to where you will want it to be. I'm approaching the 3 yr mark with my business now and I am starting to reach the point where I'm turning away gigs because I'm so booked with so many other things.

I know at first it feels like it might never go anywhere, but persevere and keep on plugging if you can.

I actually keep a few booking agreements on me at all times. Even when I am not at gigs. I have a tote bag in my car with a binder containing booking agreements, a sheet that is an exact duplicate of my rates page on my website, business cards, my restaurant "pitch" sheet, MSDS sheets on the paint, basically a little of everything I have in my home office. I have booked gigs at other gigs many times this way.

As Perry said, it takes time to build it up. They took your cards - that's a great start! I get lots of calls from people who picked up a card several years ago.

Word of mouth is the best way to get established BUT it does take time... be willing to invest in the time it is going to take as well as the expense of other methods of promotion.
