Clear the roads!!!

Post by Lynnie on Mon Aug 08, 2011 3:50 pm

My son, my ONLY child, just got his driver's permit.

And while taking him on his first drive he failed to brake in time and rolled on a right hand turn through a stop light- the whole time I'm telling (not yelling since I don't want to startle him) to brake and stop.

Lords help us!!!

(how do people survive this?!)

Ahahahaha. Yes you are! He's not allowed to leave NYS on a learner's permit.

Haha, my after my dad took me out the first time when I was 16, he decided that paying for driving school was an excellent idea Razz

He was a heck of a lot calmer than driving with my mom, though, and kept his cool even after the time I attempted a right hand turn, decided at the last minute I was going to fast, and for some reason ended up swerving back to the left, going over the curb in the process. (I thought he was never going to let me drive again - instead he told me to take a minute and carry on, lol.)

Driving over this one bridge (on the narrow side), my mom would constantly go, "Move to the right! You're too far over! Go to the left! You're too close to the middle!" - not the best conditions to learn, haha.

(Might I just point out that I've been driving for 10 years now, and have never had cause for my insurance to go up?!)

Good luck!

My friend got in the car with his mom after getting his permit. After 10 minutes of his stop-n-go, hit-the-brake, swerve-to-avoid-an-oncoming-car, and slowly drifting over the median line driving his mom asked: "Honey, do you know how to get to Skokie Hospital from here?"

When he nodded yes, she told him "Drive there. I think I need to be committed to the psych ward."

Kristal, my sisters both killed it for me. My dad took one out and she ditched the car. My mom took the other one out and she slammed on the brakes for a bird in the road and nearly sent my mom into the windshield. My parents refused to get in a car with me. I had no choice but driver's ed! lol

I have admit, I stayed really calm even though every fiber of my being was screaming inside. I'm very proud of myself. lol

Bwahahahah, Tamariel! That's perfect! I think I've decided that every time I get in the car with him, I'm going to wear a different "safety" outfit. Pillows, helmets, an inflatable costume, stuff like that. Very Happy

My mother assumed that I learned how to drive in drivers ed. Actually, we only ever went five milles an hour around a parking lot. Since I had an A in the class, I didn't have to take the practical examination (I don't think I had to take the written either- maybe it was done in class, idk) Anyway, so it turned out that I got my actuall driving license without ever once going out on the road!

That is terrifying, Geek! How'd you do the first time you went onto the road?

I know our driver's ed hit roads since ours is one of the parallel parking/k-turn learning streets (we live on a street where half of it has no houses and is a dead end. They learn there.)

No I did not do well! We lived on 4 lane hwy.! So that is how all of the 18-wheelers would come in to town bringing huge logs to the paper mill. I totally freaked out - driving 30 mph in a 55, with a huge Semi barreling down on me! The funny thing is that once I admited that I hadn't been on the road- my mom didn't try to further prepare me- she just let me go!

AHHHH!!!

I am not looking forward to teaching my daughter. She is too spacey!! Technically she should have her permit right now, but we can't afford the insurance, the permit, or anything. But she is happy to wait. Sometimes she says, it scares her so she doesn't really want to drive yet. The only reason she says she wants to drive is to be able to take me to dr appts, or the hospital. Its sweet, but she is a little to scatter brained to drive yet.

Good Luck!!! Smile

My daughter almost 18 is an excellent driver unless she has to play with the radio, then I have to hold my breath. whew!
But to be honest she does much better then my brother in law on a recent trip with him. He tried to go the wrong way on a highway exit. Scary! I did most of the driving after that. Why do some men tend to gawk when driving?
I though my dd wasn't ready for driving, but she is actually very good and watches the speed limit. Smile

My 15 year old got an online driving course for his birthday ($99) as he drives so good around the pasture and up the drive (except whe he hit 40 mph in 20 feet or less...hehe)...but I have an 18 year old who still doesn't even want his. My Grandma bought hers from Montgomery Wrd back in the day---and just renewed it as needed, never took as test...
