What do you wear? Do you have costumes?

Post by FlashM on Sat Aug 20, 2011 11:19 am

My employer usually asks us to wear tie dye tees or sometimes she'll request non-specific holiday garb, like "Look Halloween-y".

For birthday parties and community events indoors, I usually just put on a washable black knit top and pants. I avoid white tops so I don't look like the catering staff. For outdoor events in Texas, I just dress cool. It was 107 F yesterday!

I was asked to dress as an elf for Christmas company party gigs but I am 52 and plus size and wouldn't pull off "elf" even as well as Bob Newhart did. lol

So I wore a Renaissance Lady dress I'd made years before on a Simplicity pattern. I used a gold on green cotton print that looks like damask so it's machine washable, but looks rich. For the lace-up vest that was shown in velvet, I used green pinwale corduroy for the same reasons. Then I slap a holly wreath on my head and voila! Christmas Lady!

What do y'all wear for your various gigs?

It really depends the gig. In the summer months, it's skirts & lightweight shirts. It's so hot hear in FL that you just melt. I'll often wear black slacks & a nice top. I've fallen in love w/ maxie dresses. They're so comfy & look great! Around Christmas I'll go as Mrs. Clause if hired as her. I used to clown, but if you note back to HIGH FL HEAT, I try not to do that....

Basically my rules are: clean, professional, not too short or too low cut, etc. You don't want to be flashin' the kiddos or their daddys Very Happy

I've got the most awesome rainbow tie dye dress. I get as many compliments on the dress as I do my work.

I am a messy person and keep staining my clothes and throwing them away. One day I was at the bank and I saw a guy with a paint stained jeans, they were clean and even ironed, I felt so much respect for him, and he inspired me to take my old over -all and made myself nice working out fits.

I wear this one at installations, festivals and out doors events, it has nice big pockets to keep my money.

I weat this short version at the Florida inclement hot.
And the last one it's an apron that I wear over my regular clothes for private parties or when my husband doesn't allow me to wear my clowny ones.
All of them have a "Artist" or "Face Painter" write so no doubt who I am.

Right now I just wear my normal clothes to gigs - usually black pants and a blue top, and then I paint something small on my face. I'd like to come up with something a little more whimsical though.

Salwar kameez. They are already modest and colorful and it's my actual clothes so no need to purchase or create special. Even when they stain a bit you can rarely tell because they are so heavily patterned. And as a 'goddess sized' lady, I always feel comfortable and well dressed.

I always think about modesty when going to gigs. No low cut shirts or spaghetti strap tank tops. I wear a lot of The Loft tanks. I don't like to be too flashy with my makeup either. I know I'm being looked at and other people maybe future customers so I want them to like me Smile

I usually wear the same jean capris that have paint splatters already on them Wink I've messed up some dressy leggings once with white paint. Then I forgot about washing it till days later. It never came out. affraid

Last night I wore shorts with paint splatters on them. They hit me like bermuda shorts. Never too short! tongue

I'm working on getting a cute Mooseburger or Betty Cash clown costume soon. clown jocolor I've got a little clown routine while face painting. Adds to the entertainment experience Very Happy

I usually wear capris or jeans and a t-shirt with a pretty design on it, like butterflies or dragonflies, but I have had several gigs that I was very under-dressed for and was embarrassed. One was at a hotel in their grand ballroom. It was for a christening party. I did not realize it was a VERY FORMAL event. All the men in tuxedos or very expensive suits and all the women wore ball gowns with diamonds and feathers everywhere! I showed up in nice capris and a decent shirt, but I felt very out of place. Another gig was at a local country club for halloween. Again, everyone was very well-dressed, and I felt like I needed a better uniform. I am not used to such settings and was very unprepared for what to expect. I have no idea what to wear to such parties. The wait staff all wore black slacks and white blouses which looked nice, but I don't want to match the employees either.

I've learned to ask several questions when planning the gig. I always ask where it will be like outside or inside and if it is casual or dressy. I think a good idea would be to bring an extra set of clothes. Then when you walk in with your stuff and see it's fancier then you thought, you can always say, "Ok, I'm going to go get dressed now!" In the winter, I wear a long sleeve T-shirt with a polo shirt on top.. and I always wear bright colors(neon pink T and seafoam green polo.. colors that look good together.) I usually wear dark wash jeans, or khakis, or some other slacks, but never light denim. I also wear polka dot shoes, or neon colored Chuck Taylors, or my tie dye crocs... I also have shoes with bananas on them.

In the summer I rock a bright colored polo shirt(I have like... 20 of them.) and non-denim shorts. I usually wear my crocs or flip flops(too hot for anything else!)

I also try to put my hair up in two buns, because it's a cutesy look, and I wear bright eyeshadow. I wear a name badge, and in cooler months, an apron.

Ryan always wears Bowling shirts with his name embroidered on them, and recently I have also started to wear bowling shirts when I work with him. I have them in pink and white, pink and black, green and white, and blue and black. Very comfy.

If it's a formal event, then I wear a black button up top and black slacks and black shoes. Try to look as neat as possible, so I do my hair nice and wear more normal makeup. None of the fun-bright colors...

I can't wear tie dye because my main competitor in this are has all of their staff wear it. So I try to be a little different... fun, but not clownish. I'm getting custom embroidered polo shirts next week, and that'll be great!

At SickKids, we have to follow the modesty and health & safety rules: No open-toed shoes, must have covered heels, must wear sleeves, no tanks or strappy tops, shorts must be modest and be close to the knee.

Having said that....I wear a black vest with morning coat tails on it (the tails cover me so that if I'm crawling under a Stryker bed, I don't "smile" at anyone from behind when I am bending over). I wear a button up the front shirt, sometimes with a paisley tie. On the bottoms, I wear jeans or extravagant long skirts.

My shoes are either boots or Chuck Taylor Converse High tops.

My face is usually painted.

I look wacky enough to set myself apart from the regular volunteers, yet not as brilliant as the magican hospital clowns. I feel "costumed" so that at a formal event, I am not competing with the party goers, and yet, I am not all black-and-white service personnel. In the summer, at an outdoor event, I wear maxi dresses with a tee shirt underneath.

My two vests are wearing out. I need to replace them.

Happy Painting!

We have a few t-shirts from Vista Print that have pictures of Monsters on it and our business name - says "entertaining little monsters everywhere" and our name/website and phone are also on the back so people can read it while you are bending over etc. Very cute and since my husband and I both are wearing it is more of a uniform. I wear that with dark jeans or capris. I don't like to wear shorts but in FL it is too hot to be outdoors and not wear something shorter, even capris are too much sometimes. When painting I have a few aprons, some are vintage or fun and some I hand painted with my name and business name. I can wipe my brushes on this and my hands as necessary. I am a really messy painter so it helps a ton! I have a few princess costumes and tinker bell but I am getting less requests for those lately.
