Kit for an 8 year old? who got her first volunteer Job

Post by elantaura on Sat Aug 27, 2011 7:11 pm

Alright I have an 8 year old who due to a weird set of circumstances I have got a job for.
The circumstance was after book week I was asked if I wanted to do the face painting for the school by the librarian (who formerly used to do it for their plays etc.) I said I would think about it. Then all of my children as soon as we get in the car say they don’t want me to do it as it includes two events that they want to win to do with dress ups etc. my only boy said I could if I painted them dodgy.

Either way the next day I found the librarian and said no. But I suggested that my 8 year old would be a suitable replacement. As having seen what was on display, I know that she can do better. So without telling miss 8 brought a neon rainbow and black cake to school. The librarian asked if I was joking I said I wasn’t. Get………… the 8 year old to do it. Got her to paint my other daughters face as a butterfly, not great but the librarian was in dibelief as it was better than what she had been doing, and now she is the school face painter.

So my daughter went and looked at the face paints and told me she can’t work with them as it is a cheap pack from Kmart. She already wanted face paints for her birthday. And wanted some split cakes. But as she now has this school thing. She is willing to go with what she needs (as she has a job)

So what do I get her? she is heavy on brushes and finds tag easier to work with than snaz as when she is doing this she will be solo (without mum around)I think that is important.
Sponges she can get off me, I have 3, size 3 brushes that she can have, and a bottle of glitter. I know she has to have black and white. But don’t know what else to get her she will only have to paint combined 200ish faces throughout the year for assembly and school productions including the book week and Christmas stuff which is why the kids didn’t want me to do it, as they have a competition element.

Want to keep it cheap and don’t want to send my stuff to school - ever. As I am really new to FP most of my stuff is full. And it is really simple stuff like e.g. A cat whiskers nose ears, which she could add a base colour to. And she will get a few days’ notice of what they need on a list (so she can practice at home)

She is also very nervous and also excited. I am happy for her and won’t tell the kids, but secretly hope someone she paints wins these comps.

That is so awesome of you. If she gets started now, she could have her own business in a few years. I don't have any suggestions for a kit, just wanted to let you know I think you're great for letting her do this.

I hope the person she paints wins too! That would be so exciting! She will need black and white for sure, for other colors, I think it would depend on how good she is at mixing them on a sponge or with a brush. You may be able to get by with less for her for awhile if she can mix some things to get the color she needs/wants. Either way, I'm sure she will be like the rest of us and always want more Smile My daughter is 6, and she has all of my snaz paints that I started with (Just a few of the little ones with like 8 or so colors) she calls it her kit. . .lol.

If it were me, I might buy her a few of those (to give her a few options on colors), Since she will probably be using the colors mostly for bases, Snaz might not be so bad for her. Then as she uses them up, maybe buy her a surprize Tag color every once and awhile to really build up her kit.

But also give her a few super cool things like a couple rainbow cakes. She will have to have some white and black that she feels comfortable with.

That way you wouldn't be spending a fortune, but she would have what she needs.

Oh and don't forget the glitter Smile

These little kits are what I'm talking about. . .they have a very tiny cake, but would give her more color options for a pretty cheap price Smile

Good for her!

But am I the only one who thinks that the school should be the one footing the bill for this? If they say she can use the cheapie stuff, tell them it's not the safe kind and get the school a kit (that you will be reimbursed for) for your daughter to use when she's volunteering.

I'm not a parent but I'm thinking that school is already expensive enough without having to send pricey face paints to school!

The school has spent the money allocated on the cheap set from kmart. we live in a low socio economic area and the school has alot of additional cost such as parents who don't buy pencils, books etc. about 50 of the kids have to be supplied with breakfast.
and my daughter wants to do it, cant work (understandably) with the kmart paints.
She turns 9 next month, and even before this wanted face paints for her birthday. she dose stuggle with snaz as this is the cheaper option I am trying to get her a little more practice with it. but she gets a bit frustrated. I started with tag so havn't much expierience with sanz except a few pots myself (mabye I need tips to help her)

she dose trys to blend but has a little trouble and as she is dong it without me and only 8 don't want her to stress. I have agreed to let her have the end of any pots and can give her Tag red soon. But I am sure that what she is doing is very basic.

I am getting it for her so that it remains her property - not the schools. and don't mind buying her a small kit as they are supporting her in a way by letting her do it, I expected them to say no.
It is a under supported school that has great staff thankfully, that encourage the kids to be involved. and the older kids who do some of the performance stuff, who seen her do the butterfly are really excited about her painting them.

What about buying the TAG "sampler" palettes? You could get her an essential and in the future pastels and/or pearls and/or neons. They can be refilled from larger pots, and what she doesn't need for something can stay home (not to mention it can all fit in a relatively small palette). And she has "little fingers". Can mix, but also have a good selection to work with Smile

Noella your brilliant Honestly new to this didn't think I could refilling from home and had ruled them out due to that. How would you refill them. Dare I say it for lacking knowledge spoon it out of big pot . press down on top through plastic bag? kind of like a split cake? cant stand the idea of taking it off the side it erks me loking at it. and how wet would it have to be to do this.I thing I'm very slightly OCD

and happy vicky thanks for your idea too I was originally thinking this about the bases, miss 8 said and what is I have to paint a dogs tounge? you know I find it hard? she getting cheeky now like I should know better - no good dead gos unpunished by our children. she had a go at me for not bringing white for dots on the butterfly when she painted on miss 5. I find it amusing - hope I'm not like that.

She acctually suffers ADHD type i,(formerly ADD) and gets anxious and has super shyness issues - except with me, she told the peadiatrician that art and swimming make her happy so hopefully this whole thing will go a long way to making her happy and bringing her out of her shell.
Thanks for all the great suggestions and support by everyone.

My 7yo kiddo's kit is made up of a tag rainbow cake, a pearl rainbow cake and some half/half splits of main colours eg- black/white, red/orange etc.. I sliced and diced these from my own kit. (I use half/halfs in my own kit as they take up half the space that way!) She also uses the individual colours in the rainbow splits like they're mini pallettes. And... she has sponges, brushes, a water tub, a small glitter puffer and water spritzer. All in a kit like a real pro Smile

I use the Wolfe Essential palettes a lot (then I don't carry much of anything, but have all the colors I want). I just grab a bit from a high edge of the big ones, with a palette knife (which isn't sharp, just has flat parts that slide under a bit), and then press it into the smaller palette container. If I find it is crumbly pulling from the big one, I add a drop of water from my dropper bottle and let it soak into the area I want to pull from - then it doesn't crumble and comes out smoothly (and smoothes out well in the small one). It's exactly like making a split yes to flatten and finish - you just don't need to have strips, just slicing a bit off of the higher edge of the large one works great.

I made a mini kit like that using a hard plastic watercolor case from the dollar store (not the ones that you can take the white thingy out, but the ones that have hard molded circles) I just scooped up a bit of paint with a butter Knife out of my regular pot and mashed it into the slot in the pallette. Made mini splits in there too (by rolling each color into playdough-like snakes before mashing them in). A good tip for mashing is to take a bit of Glad Press and Seal wrap and pull it really tight over your thumb. the paint (even the really soft metalics) won't stick to it at all! After I steal a bit from my big cakes I like to flatten it back out this way too.

Thank you everyone you all been very helpfull
I have decided to go with alot of the ideas am going to get a water colour case empty it and use for the for the basic colours. give her snaz that I dont use so she can learn to use it. give her a neon cake as I have two, a bottle of glitter, buy her the Tag pearl pallette, a split cake of her choice new. a roll of wax paper and 3 brushes.
as she has a rewards chart she can work towards other things which I am sure she will want.
and when the school has its $16 budget next year for face paint to spend it on wolfe white and black. -hope they listen.

The good thing about the water color pallette is that when you get a new color in your kit, you can share it!
