Is this where you come to debrief? I had a very BIG day.

Post by Fun2Play on Mon Aug 29, 2011 11:48 am

This post, I suppose, is for the newer painters like me. I just feel the need to debrief after my first big 2 day event on the weekend and my husband is a little over hearing about it...

I didn't quite realise what I was in for when I accepted my first official contract job with a shopping mall. They had a big family day with a life size MACK the truck from Cars the movie visiting on site to coincide with a big sale on in all the shops. In was raining and a Saturday. Needless to say there were more kids than I've seen in one place for a long time.

With 10 minutes to go before my official start time, I look up from unpacking my kit and see a line up already gathering and all eyes on me. Of course I buckled under the glare and started early. A few minutes later the line was about 20 deep. Talk about pressure. I regret not taking a photo of that line. It was incredible. I couldn't believe people were prepared to wait for an hour to get painted by ME! Somehow I managed to stay calm after my initial shock and relaxed a bit when I hid my photo gallery under the table and kept the designs as simple as possible without being too rough... Thank goodness I had the foresight to go to the loo and have some drinking water on hand otherwise I would have been in real trouble.

Forgive me I am prone to exaggerate, but I think I painted around 80 kids in 4 hours. Maybe not, but I know for sure it was a LOT of kids. I handed out heaps of cards and made a few good contacts with offers of upcoming events and future gigs.

The day before was a little less hectic and I managed to get a few photos, but none of the super BIG MACK saturday. Here's the link: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.238932146142227.51520.204971372871638&type=1

If you recognise any designs I will freely admit to being inspired (and more than occasionally imitating) a wide range of other artists. You are all stars in my eyes!

Anyway, I let the kids suggest any design they thought of, and I offered them a simple version. It was quite liberating actually and I got to paint a bigger variety than if the kids had chosen something from my picture gallery. It was also good that they weren't able to compare my simplified version and fast linework with what I had painted at a more leisurely pace.

On the grapevine today I have heard that 'the lady who painted at the shopping centre on Saturday was fantastic' Embarassed (this being from a school fete organiser who was offering me a gig in October - she said her daughter had told her), which IMO is too kind, but the sad thing is this region doesn't seem to have seen split cakes before, so they were easily impressed, LOL!

I have sent an email thank you note to the shopping centre events coordinator and asked her if she could provide feedback (good or bad), as a new business this would be very helpful. Plus if it is good I will use it as a testimonial. If not, I will address the problem.

Ok, my whole point being that I surprised myself and I really feel like I delivered something of value to the client and the kids, while increasing the profile of my business significantly.

Sounds like you did a fantastic job. Interesting to hear how you coped. I am also a face painting newcomer and just doing parties for friends and fanily for free at the moment. Feel I need to get a good repertoire of designs and get my speed up before I start charging!
How long have you been face painting?

I think the pictures look great! Very consistent and good quality, especially for the line you had to deal with, I'm afraid I probably would have rushed too much and messed up the designs. I'm impressed you even got photos! Smile

Congrats...there is no stopping you now.

OMG, I am relatively new, too and I know what you mean!!! The first time you see that huge line of people it's definitely a gut check, and a super huge high!
Same thing here with split cakes--everyone seems totally wowed and I love it.
And I think your work was awesome, definitely a simpler version of what you usually paint/do but not *bad work* like a few turn out under line pressure or because they want more money. You look like you were able to accomodate without sacrificing too much quality and it came out perfectly.
Go you! Here's to many, MANY more Smile

Thanks for your cheers. You are all too kind, but it's nice to have the opportunity to debrief to people who understand and offer advice, rather than roll their eyes and change the subject.

I feel I must point out that those photos were from the previous day when it wasn't quite so busy. On the big day I just did not have time for photos, although I wish I had taken some because I painted a lot more variety.

I'm sure some of my work was not so good. In fact there was one that I needed to wipe off and redo. It was only a little fairy, but I hadn't done one before and she was like a squished mosquito! lol! It was the last paint of the day, but I insisted on redoing it. Something to practice, I guess. Perhaps I can suggest a fairy challenge????

In terms of speed, I guess that there's nothing like being under pressure to hurry you along. Putting my portfolio away was definitely a good idea.

And to reply to Donwyn, I've been painting for about 7 weeks. I bought my paints in early July. I practiced almost every day for the first few weeks, and researched like crazy. I have a huge 'inspire me' file on my computer, and my favourites have been transferred to my phone gallery for reference and regular admiring/studying. Oh yes, I am slightly obsessed. I have painted at three markets so far (on each occasion my seat was very rarely empty for enough time to clean my brushes) and twisted balloons at two school fetes.
I have several bookings and gigs coming up over the next 2 months, all from proactive facebook marketing flower

All I can say to those who aren't quite sure if they are ready, is to have that leap of faith. If you have a quiet day you can take more time to really beautify each design, but if you are busy then you know that (a) you can put your price up;(b) you are doing a good job that people appreciate; and (c) you can simplify your design down to it's bones if it's a contract event to get through the line.

Finally, split cakes and one strokes palettes are really, really impressive to people who have never seen them before.

I was thinking there was a Fairy Challenge somewhere over there. I searched and I found a Fairy thread. Not a challenge but I hope it helps you, Trinkie.

I know, I know...it's so much fun to paint them, we forget the biz side...until we run outta paint!

I put a littlew quote about love in big letters they can read on the reverse of my business card, and then I remember to leave a lasting impression...
