Latest SMDH moment

Post by Kristal on Tue Aug 30, 2011 4:10 am

I think the shortest amount of time I've been asked about before was 45 minutes.

I just got an email where they wanted face painting and balloons for 10 kids in half an hour. Whopping 1.5 minutes per item per child, not including all of the decision/chair times!

If I was that fast I'd still charge you the 2.0 hour rate for the set up/take down/prep/cleaning time - which would make me $200 in 30 minutes! I should work on Guiness-record style speed now Razz

Anyone else? What are your latest "seeeeeeriously?!" moments?

I got a weekend deal in September, and it is a huge place around here that only uses the same FP'er in every deal they do. Their regular FP'er moved, and I got the call. I cut my prices in half to get my foot in the door, with the understanding that my rates would go to regular prices next gig. No problem. Got a contract in the mail stating that they would be charging $3 a face to "recoup" their cost from hiring me, and that after 1000 faces I would be allowed to raise my rates next time. They will be making a profit after the first 130 that I do. Huh?? 1000.... come on! Not what we agreed on!!!

1st mistake: drastically cutting your rate.
2nd mistake: signing that contract...if you haven't, don't. If it's not a win win, then you're most likely the person losing out.

Oh, yeah... No....

I had a guy want me to paint 400 kids in 2 hours?!? I was speechless at 1st. He didn't like my answer(once I found my voice). Multiple face painters at $XX or hire me for a MUCH longer amount of time....

We're fast and awesome, but not superheroes!!

Do they think we have faces pre-painted and we just slap 'em on or something?

you could not even airbrush that fast! You could lick and stick...maybe, but kids don't fly in and out of the chair! Hey, line them up in a row, and use some spray paint...can you mix that with lotion to make it smooth? Razz

I always have fun trying to figure out your acronyms, Kristal Wink

Usually I try to figure it out on my own before I google it...this time my favorite guess was "Latest smack my damn husband moment". But of course the post didn't fit with that...so google straightened me out, lol.

Anyway! My latest SMDH moment was actually with myself. I had my very first potential client call the other day, and I felt totally unprepared. I couldn't seem to remember the answers to the simplest of questions...

Client: What's the name of this business again?
Me: Uh...Tamara! Ehh...ermm...NO! Miami Party Art, I mean. HEH! *wishes to die*

I've never felt confident in speaking with people, always felt very awkward. I do have a call form in the works so that I don't forget which questions to ask or what to say in general...it just wasn't finished yet for that particular phone call. Embarassed

LOL! I had a Doctor's office ask 3 times for my email address while I gave them my phone number each time. I kept thinking, "Can't she hear me?" Yup, it was a Duh moment...
