Talk about EMBARRASING! This ever happened to you?

Post by jendez04 on Tue Aug 30, 2011 6:08 pm

OMG, I was painting at a Grand Opening event on Friday afternon. It was really hot out, maybe in the upper 90's. I was in my usual gear, black pants, yellow shirt, suspenders, etc... A child was in my chair, I was painting a spider-man mask on him. All of a sudden, I couldn't hear anything around me and I couldn't see a thing. I was passing out right there on the kid! Luckily, a girl who worked there was right next to my table. She saw me start to go down and literally dragged me to the bathroom! I sat on the floor and she brought me cold water and fruit salad. I told her i'd be fine... I locked myself in the bathroom. I proceeded to pass out! LOL!!! I came to, on the floor of this bathroom (thank God it was decent) and realized I still had a kid waiting for me in my chair. I quickly washed my face, chugged the cold water and jammed the fruit in my mouth and opened the bathroom door. The manager and sales girls were all waiting outside of the bathroom! They suggested I go home, but I declined and told them all I felt much better and that I would continue. I don't think I have ever apologized more in my life! Soooo, I went outside and continued to paint. HOW EMBARRASING!!! All I can imagine is me passing out and falling on top of that poor 5 year old boy!!!
Shocked

Sorry it's so long!!!

Why? Had you not eaten? Hypo or hyperglycemic? Have you done this before? Are you pregnant?

I'd be more worried about why than what people thought.

Oh no! I hate that happened to you Sad I've never passed out, but I can imagine it would be super scary! I know a girl I worked with many years ago, passed out and then peed while she was passed out so it could be worse . . . lol.

Make sure you stay really hydrated in the future. If it was hot, that's my guess as to why Smile

LOL!!! Definitely not preggos! I have 4 kids already! My guess was the heat... I've only passed out once before, in my bank right after I had donated blood. Now, everytime I go in to make a deposit or whatever, I get greeted as the girl who passed out in line!
I'm not too worried about it though. It was uber hot and I attributed it to that and my jeans and long hair I guess! Feeling fine! LOL!!! Thanks everyone!

wow that would of really freaked me out.
I have felt like I was going to pass out before - but it hasn't happened.... thank goodness.

I used to get anxiety attacks in the morning on the trains... and twice I passed out and people had to carry me off the train... still don't know why... all I know is don't get on a crowded train.
I'm surprised you managed to keep going.... surprising what the pull of a waiting kid can do to us!
I have been told to take multivitamins before a long gig or festival... but I haven't tried it yet.

I had that happen to me a few times when I was a lot younger. Each time it happened, it was very hot and I had become overheated so I believe it was heat exhaustion or even heat stroke (one time I did vomit and was very confused afterward). In retrospect I probably should have seen a doctor, but I was a stupid teenager/young adult LOL.

I think staying hydrated is really key to help prevent this. Also, even a small fan will make a huge difference as any moving air will cool your skin if you are sweating. And if you do happen to feel it coming on - I used to start to gray out and my ears would buzz sometimes, and I found that putting my head between my knees really does help.

Poor baby! I have had kids pass out in my line twice...seems like heat, stress, poor eating that day, dehydration & just too much sun.

Oh no!! How scary! So glad you are okay...wow, gotta watch out for that heat! I painted at a county fair for a week in the upper 90's while pregnant too...let's just say I had 3 fans pointed directly at me and had tons of water! ;-) Haven't passed out on a gig, but I did once as a teenager about 20-30 minutes after getting an immunization. Fell right over in the clinic lobby and spent the rest of the afternoon having my head examined for a concussion from the fall! Sheesh! Since then I know that feeling when it comes on and have been able to (barely) escape actually fainting by putting my head between my knees...it's NOT fun! And totally embarrassing!

The heat can be so dangerous! I am glad that you feel fine now, but keep hydrated for sure! I would go to the doctor and discuss it, just in case. I have a daughter with hypoglycemia, and even if she is not running low enoung to pass out, she does not feel as good as she could if she just runs chronically low normal all day. She has to work to keep her blood sugar in the 80's or she feels yucky. You might be surprised, so I would go tell the doctor what happend. Definetly, never lock yourself in the bathroom when you are in danger of passing out again. If it were blood sugar, you could have been in serious trouble! Take care, and I am glad you feel better!

That is pretty scary. I've felt close to passing out, but never passed out. I face painted this summer in 90+ degree weather w/ a fever/flu(I didn't know till I got home & it was the next day that it was the flu). I make sure to keep hydrated, keep my very long hair up & in a pony tail & dress super light weight for hot outdoor gigs. I also keep fruit & cheese on hand for energy. Make sure not to lock your knees when standing for a long time(I've seen many Navy guys at attention for long times pass out because the locked their knees:-)

I do'nt think is embarassing, I think it's dangerous. You could hurt yourself and the kid. And fainting is not good! How did this happen?

Poor thing, I'm glad you were okay! A couple of years ago this happened to me at a July 4th event for a large casino/horse racing track. 104 degrees, no breeze to speak of, etc. Everything just started turning black, went deaf suddenly, and I fell down on my hands and knees. I was mostly finished with the child in my chair so they left, and I went inside the building and laid down on a couch in an empty room, still feeling way out of it. The people who hired me were not really very concerned. The guy said as I was stumbling off toward the building, "I'll just let you know if any more customers come by and want to get painted..." Ughh, okay... I had been laying on the couch for a few minutes, far from recovered, when he poked his head in and told me I had customers. I'm not sure if he didn't realize what was happening, or what. I told him I'd be there in a minute, sat up very slowly, and when it seemed safe I went back outside.

That was the last year I worked for them. LOL. It was PPF too, so not sure why they were so concerned about me manning my area. Rolling Eyes

I did realize later that especially in such extreme temps we need to be sure not to stand too still. It's hard when we are concentrating, trying to keep a steady hand, etc. But being very still, not moving your arms and legs much, etc decreases your circulation and can make you pass out. I can now "feel" when I'm standing too still, and automatically take a moment to get my blood pumping again.

That's exactly what i was talking out. I've been at more Navy ceremonies where one of the young men standing at attention in blazing heat has just toppled over. there were 3 that took the plunge at my hubby's boot camp graduation even though they had tons of training on how not to pass out.
I hope you're feeling better now.

Some thoughts:
1) Keep an ice chest filled with packs or bring the snap packs. WEAR THEM!
2) WATER! If it's super hot and you are sweating beyond normal means, switch to a high electrolyte drink (gatorade, powerade, etc)
3) Move your legs frequently.
4) Place a clause in your contract stating that if the heat becomes extreme, you reserve the right to close shop. I've never fully closed because of this clause, but one time I did come close. I had a little girl in my line tell her big sister that she felt 'funny' (the kid looked about to pass out.) Let's just say that facepainter took a break, and it's a good thing that the client who hired me happened to be an EMT who kept a kit nearby. As a side point, I was shocked that mom decided that she didn't want to call 9-1-1 because (and I quote) ambulances are expensive.
