Publicity stunt. I'm not sure this helps the art community really. Rolling Eyes

Hmm. I wonder why he feels it is necessary to have the model go bare when the Proshield seems like such a logical option for this circumstance. Maybe they want to be arrested for the extra attention? G-string draws a crowd; Arrests get you on the news.

I agree...what could've been a positive moment instead sounds like it was viewed as a freak show for the crowd. Is Mr. Golub a known body painter or was he just an artist doing his "thang" without having her in a thong?

Yeah, terms like "slathered her naked body in paint" are definitely harmful.

What's the problem? It was a combination of fine art and performance art. If you don't want to paint naked people in public, don't, but it seems a bit disingenuous to criticize someone else for doing it. We live in a society that would rather see someone abused or humiliated in public than nude. It's just a painted body. When you think about it, why arrest them at all? They weren't hurting anyone and were bringing a moment of beauty to the lives of those passing by. Good for them.

Just to be devil's advocate here....I do not disagree that the moral compass in the western world can be a bit skewed at times, we are not quite 'burka' wearing prude, nor are we 'if you got 'em -swing 'em' Amazon jungle, but I think that most real body painters are very aware of 'time and place'. For anything on my website, pasties and genitals covered. I prefer to keep everything PG13 or even 'G' rated as much as possible. I actually do body art at an S & M Social - from leather bondage on up (and down) the fetish wear food chain...and even those have a 'no oriface' rule. We have laws...debate on if they are correct, moral, proper or fair aside.....they are laws. If I am not mistaken (and I may be) you may legally show your breasts (the wisdom of this is debatable) in many states and provinces but yer down below naughty bits must be covered. Art - performance or otherwise - must remain within the law. If you choose to circumvent the law...as a stunt or a statement...then it is a choice and the consequences of that choice are bound to happen and should be expected. When it happens, one can hardly be indignant as they were aware that this is a possibility...if not an outright surity. I may be so bold as to also suggest, that after this fact, the other thing that may bother some painters here is the lack of safety for the model as there is a question on the actual paint used in the piece.

My 2 cents.....probably worth less but there you go!
I'm a new painter, I am not a moralist or a lawyer, but I am practical! Annnnd feel free to dismiss this whole thing as I don't claim to be right, just calling it as I sees it!

Right... everyone has a right to run around naked with genitals showing in the privacy of their own home, but they do not have the right to publicly force themselves upon other people who may hold different views on the matter. This shows a lack of respect for the beliefs and values of others, which is ironic since most displays of this sort are from people who want to be seen as "open minded".

(My personal opinion) silent

If you've ever been to Times Square, you know there are a million different folks utilizing it as an outlet for profit and fame. It's Times Square! Very Happy If you're going to have cowboys singing in their underwear and folks buying spray paint art for twenty bucks (which is actually amazing if you've ever seen it) or a $26 pastrami sandwich at Roxy's, well...the guy was pretty clever if you ask me. His art made it to the NY Times, right? Wink

That being said, as a mother I would have been really peeved if we'd been there with my kids and some chick was walking around with her panties off, in the name of art or not. (Though on Times Square you do have to kind of expect almost anything.....) So while I think the guy made a brilliant marketing move for himself, as an individual and an artist, I absolutely don't support or appreciate him.

That was a Total publicity stunt...and he got his name in the news, probably on TV too.....he accomplished what he wanted to do, ditto for the model. It wasn't about art at all......just my opinion.

Mosts artists I've seen that cross over from painting on canvas to painting body to acrylic. Drives me crazy. I try to educate as much as I can because it makes such a big difference to how well it works.

As for the guy, it mostly disappoints me because it just looks bad for the rest of us. Hooray for him and his publicity. Boo for us and the "ohmygosh, didn't I just see someone get arrested for that? No I won't do bodypainting."

Definitely keeps life interesting!
