Painting a Canopy
I'm seriously considering painting my business name on my canopy. I'd like something in rainbow colors that sparkle a bit if possible. Anyone have suggestions for paint? Layout? Anything?
Re: Painting a Canopy

Something like this? I did it with a fabric paint kit I bougth at walmart, The problem was I did it in my drive way in a windy evening, I got all the falling leaves and bugs stiking on the fresh paint... no good.
Re: Painting a Canopy
Actually you are the one who inspired me to do this.
I couldn't remember your name, or I would have asked you directly. I was thinking of using acrylic since I already have a ton of it, but I'll check out the fabric paint as well before commencing. Thank you.

Re: Painting a Canopy
I used to mix the textile medium into my acrylic paints when I wanted to paint on fabric. Then, two years ago while helping paint the scenery for the school play, I kinda forgot that I was holding the paint in the same hand as my brush (I do not know how you forget something like that- but I totally did) and spilled a whole bottle of metalic green craft paint down my shirt and jeans. It was very strange how straight the paint fell leaving a perfect jewel toned stripe down my body. And of course since they were my favorite jeans I continued to wear them. Two years and at least 70 washes later that green paint is still there. Turns out that textile medium is worth Jack!
Re: Painting a Canopy
Hmmm, Idk. I know I used to paint on clothes, and the textile medium was used to keep it IN the clothes! lol All it does is soften the acrylic so it doesn't dry to hard plastic on the fabric. I don't think it is supposed to make it easier to come out. It just turns it into a paint suitable to paint on fabric, so it isn't like a hard plastic when it dries. Sorry you had a hard time with it though! I hate it when I ruin my clothes with paint!
Re: Painting a Canopy
I like to change things often & don't like to be stuck w/ something. I don't think I'd like to paint my canopy as it's too permanent, but I'm looking to make a very vibrant banner that I could put up on my tent.
Re: Painting a Canopy
I like to change things as well, but I thought long and hard about a company name that could last a lifetime. "Debra Newman Art" should never have to change.....not even if I got married again, which is extremely doubtful...lol
Re: Painting a Canopy
I didn't have a hard time with the textile medium- it just didn't make a difference to me if I used it or not. The permenance in the fabric is the same either way. And it soaks into the fibers the same way too, so to me it is just a wasted step.
Re: Painting a Canopy
I've painted acrylic on fabric for lots of reasons and never used textile medium (never even thought about it).
Re: Painting a Canopy
It would depend what your canopy is made of. If you use acrylics you may want to scotch guard because the acrylics alone may mess up the weatherproofing. We use oil based paint pens at work on umbrellas drys fast and is waterproof but will fade a bit in the sun.
Re: Painting a Canopy
Thanks kym, tents don't last forever, by the time you are bore with the paint on it, its gonna be time for a new one, EZ-UP has a pocket where you can slide your banner, sometimes if the canvas has so much poliester on it, acrylic won't stick, and you don't need to put all the medium in the bottle of paint, just a few dropps in your palet, one good thing about the fabric paint it is that is 3D, so is good for the out liner.
Re: Painting a Canopy
ok so someone may think im crazy, but i use sample pots of house paint. its super durable, i dont have to worry about it smudging, washing off in bad weather it just stays and you can get the super bright amazing colours. i use dulux paint and british paints they have the brightest, but yeh when it comes to outdoor wear, these are the best!!!!
