TCU horned frog help, PLEASE!!

I am really struggling with this logo! Does anyone have any suggestions for simplifying it or a system to approach painting it? It's for my SIL on her belly.

Have you tried drawing or painting it out on paper first?
I find trying to draw it first gives me a feel for the idea.

Man I thought I had it bad with the Boise State logo! Break it down into pieces...I would start with a sideways heart in white, if you tilt your head to the right you'll see what I mean, the basic shape is sort of a heart. Then I'd add the claw feet and the tail. From there I'd outline it, lay out the main details like the chin, mouth, eyes and legs....from there it's just the little spikes here and there.
